Just like to say a big thank you to Colin and Jo for a fantastic afternoon out today.

Some may know that I was the successful bidder on an auction prize at the Lotus Frolic last October at the factory. The prize was a one to one session at CAT Driver training.

As I don't have much experience of track driving I opted for the novice course.

Colin was a great instructor and I managed to come away with a better understanding of my car and how it handles and how to get round a track with an element of skill.

We used a variety of the tracks and doing emergency stops from over 100mph is certainly a new experience to me!

I would thoroughly recommend these courses to people they are certainly worth the money to improve your skills and also find out how your car handles.

Great - glad you enjoyed it.

I am booked for August. Which car did you choose - heart says Lotus, head say Subaru as I spend more time in the Audi than the Lotus. Also more chance of hearing the instructor.

Alan

PS - Note to everone else, the CAT training is open to everone, not just the mods.

Just completed the "Performance Driver Course" and can not recommend it enough.

A big thanks to Colin who does an amazing job to teach so much in a single day whilst making it lots of fun at the same time. Its always great when you find someone who has managed to make their hobby into their job and his enthusiasm shines through. He also has a great way of explaining some of the more technical aspects of what the cars suspension is doing in a way that can easily be understood and put to use. Thanks also to Jo for organizing it and being flexible about car choice etc.

It was an ideal course for me as it focuses on skills that are useful both on track and the road. As its one to one training its also flexible so you can focus on getting whats important to you out of the day. I chose to use their track prepared Subaru but also took along my Esprit which worked out really well as I could swap between the two.

A mention must also go to Millbrook Proving Ground - a petrol heads playground! We used most parts of the complex

Mile straight - high speed braking (I did not realise that ABS does not work at all at high speeds as the brakes can not lock up the wheel). Braking a few times from 100mph plus also seems to have de-glazed / improved the Esprit brakes. I learned a lot about braking on the limit.

High speed circuit (the bowl) - this was used for practicing emergency lane changes and also the effect of the throttle on steering. When you get to the right speed (>100mph) you can take your hands off the wheel and steer on the accelerator alone!

Steering pad - this is a big areas of tarmac where you follow a white line in a circle. As you increase in speed you find the limits of the cars grip and can safely explore whether it has understeer or oversteer. The Esprit got up to a good speed, but then with little warning the back end lets go. Almost impossible to recover. Colin advised me to check the geometry as the oversteer was so sudden. This alone could make the trip worthwhile if it saves a potential accident.

Handling circuit - this is a bit like the top gear test track. It has challenging corners but is fairly short so you can learn them. You put what you have learned so far into action and Colin gives great advice on setting the car up for the corner, braking, steering and when you can get back on the power. With his advice the lap times came tumbling down.

Public road - combined with a quick lunch you follow a circular route to understand where what you learn on track can / can not be applied to the road.

Alpine circuit - this is a twisty, hilly circuit with some great hairpin turns. I chose to use the Subaru on this rather than risk the Espirt and it was great fun.

It was a great day, and as mentioned above I can not recommend it enough.
