clutch chatter

Recommended Posts

My S3 clutch chatters a bit when i start taking my foot off in the first gear. It does it for a very short time and then goes away. Trasmission shifts smoothly otherwise. No chattering in 2nd and higher gear. Is this normal? Thanks for your input

mine is no different in first.  what do you mean by "chatter"?

What I meant by chatter is that it flutters a bit. So when you start to lift your foot off the clutch, there is a small vibration.

a vibration felt by your foot isn't a major issue. i'm about to go for a drive, so i'll let you know if i can feel anything happening on my '84. quite sure i've never heard a chatter before.

sorry. couldn't recreate your conditions. something may be shaking loose, which would wobble most on low gear. have you tried listening from outside the driver's seat?

Think your talking or a bit of clutch judder.

Not a problem, mine does it aswell.

It can depend on the type of clutch fitted, if its a competition clutch then you tend to get a bit of judder in 1st as the take up is slightly more vicious due to the friction material used and the strength of the springs. You dont get it in the other gears as your not slipping the clutch at all.

I'm not worrying about it with mine so I wouldnt loose any sleep over it.

Cant see it being that wayne. If there were oil getting on the friction plates they'd be slipping like a bitch especially in the higher gears.

Still think its just down to the type of clutch fitted. If its a worry then change it but its not going to do any harm. Ive got it on mine and Ive experienced it on other cars fitted with heavier 'competition type' clutches.

p.s. if your car falls to pieces, I live in Spain!!! :D

Try checking engine and gearbox mounts, it may be that one or more are getting a bit passed there prime.

Or I would agree with Wayne could be small bit of oil contamination on clutch

Hi

It depends by what you mean as 'Chatter' I get the occasional shudder when pulling off in first, usually when engine is warm, but I put it down to me as I drive another car as my every day car. Basically me not being used to this clutch.

A squeal/chatter could be your thrust baring, However this would be there all the time when you dip the clutch & not as noticeable when driving. or when the clutch is out. prob more a sqeeking noise

You mentioned, would you say, vibration when you dip the clutch peddle on the peddle its self?

Best way to identify this is to dip the clutch, with the engine running, with out any shoes on. If you feel any vibration here then you may need to consider the Spigot baring.

Q for you. Do you know when the Clutch had any work done to it, When was it replaced ect? If any work was done did they replace the spigot baring? & of course the Nylon washer that sits on the end of the drive shaft. How loud is this noise?

Reason I ask is a mate of mine lost his Crank on his S3 turbo. The cause was his Spigot baring gave up causing the drive shaft to knacker the crank. End result was an engine rebuild, which he's working on now. He didn't even realise it had gone till it was to late.

This is only a fine needle baring, that costs about

The need for speed can be found with a Lotus
