Thanks much for the explanations to my questions, Mike. And as you imply, a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for taking the time to put it up there for me--I must have spent over 30 minutes studying it for details and nuances. While the location for the starter motor is space-savingly ingenious, I have to hope that it has a long and happy life, as R & R'ing it seems to involve a bit more effort than the average engine; but, of course, the Esprit is no average car!

Will the unforeseen disassembly of the LR suspension (to accommodate the wheel bearing replacement) involve any bushing(s) removal, or "just" (ha!) pulling the linkage bolts out as necessary? Wheel bearing are weird animals indeed. Some seem to last for an eternity, others seem to have a death wish. Considering the constant forces they are subject to, it's amazing that they last longer than a few thousand miles. Are the ones on the Esprit tapered bearings?

Cheers,

John

I want to know what that is you have covering the floor, and how durable it is to work on because it looks luxurious.

have you ever tried to hit the magnet on start problems. Or have you ever seen what the starter looks if there is dirt an leaves on top of the engine block and covers the drain holes... .

Oh my dear -what a brave dreamer

Hahahahaha... and deny all those the pleasure of ownership - no way !

Here are some images of the hub removal.

Loosen the disc retaining screws - handbrake on. Release handbrake.

f_DSCF0035m_ef4c4ef.jpg

Punch out the pad retaining pin, so that I can check the pads.

f_DSCF0018m_c95f534.jpg

f_DSCF0019m_035bebb.jpg

Remove the top caliper bracket bolt and loosen the lower allowing the caliper to swivel free.

Then remove the disc retaining screws and remove the brake disc.

f_DSCF0021m_f55c7ff.jpg

f_DSCF0022m_169c7fe.jpg

Using the access hole in the hub, remove the 6 hub cap bolts.

f_DSCF0025m_ad84e16.jpg

The hub and wheel bearing can then be removed from the hub carrier.

f_DSCF0026m_77a5fe1.jpg

Hub carrier cleaned and ready for the reverse procedure.

Thanks!

I have tried : an blow torch, some paint remover (with aether content) from the home-workers store, and an rotating wire-brush.

To remove the paint with heat you need real big flames (not good for the alloy-casting), the paint thinner/remover is just to environmentally friendly and soft (in our 'keep it' *opportune & green & friendly* century) and the wire-brush did the job (with lots of marks on the surface) bud does kit way to shiny (i want to have the cast look -so that the wrinkle paint looks even more like it should... .

So will try to get that stuff over here.

A further update.

The RH rear pads are screwed..... as is the RH rear caliper. The seal is totally knackered and the piston is badly corroded.

nice & shiny legs altogether with PU bushes for your beauty.. :D

Mike, as the rear caliper is (and wheel bearing too..) an simple Renault sourced part -why not overhaul it ? Should be easy to source an seal replacement-kit in the e-bay world ..

Mike, they still have a couple of O/S rears left. I have bought one in the last week or so. Ordered through Rob at Strattons, stating part no and price plus postage.

A day for a string of good news :D

Firstly, I managed to secure a new RH rear Brembo caliper for next to nothing - thank you Lotus !

Secondly, I found someone to overhaul my LH rear caliper. So that was whipped off ready for packing.

f_DSCF0011m_71807b1.jpg

Thirdly, I got a delivery date for the clutch - second half of July.

Finally, posty delivered something from the USA for me to put on the car - a bolt-on detachable steering wheel boss.

This is good for any standard six or three bolt Momo, Sparco, OMP type wheel.

It is so easy to get in and out without the wheel in place.

f_DSCF0004m_a42a700.jpg

I crafted a centre cover by splitting a gash piece of cf/nomex honeycomb sandwich.

The boss brings the wheel closer and feels great in combination with the seats - I

Brief update.

Finally got around to clearing out the oil coolers and hoses. Decided best to use an air compressor and a piece of 5/8 BSP hose end.

With a spare male/male adaptor, connect the compressor hose up to the

Mike, that point of cleaning reminds me on what's still to do on mine... . First plan was to use an big *black water* pump out of moms garden house. Some old fuel or engine cleaner and an steady flush in reverse direction.

Bud if compressed air does the same, why not this way ..

Urgh... what a horror story...... :)

Attacking the front-end now and the original repair work leaves a lot to be desired. The lower bumper section is now off and the oil coolers/hoses are out.
