The sheer cheek. Midlife doesn't even start until 40. I'm no where near that. Well, I am still in my 30s. Just.

And of course,

Even so, isn't it a little over the top to put your wife on ebay?

Haha! Bibs is right tho!

When I bought my first Lotus it was my 40th Birthday and my wife said that it was a mid life crisis, I said at least it was a car and not a young dolly bird I was driving (or riding!).

She admitted that was a point and it was the last time she mentioned a mid-life crisis!

Since when does a Lotus define a mid-life crisis? I bought my Europa when I was 23 and still have it. Does that mean I haven't yet outgrown that stage of life?

On the other hand, I was 49 when I bought the Esprit. At that time I was living and working in Calgary although we kept our place on the coast and my wife stayed there most of the time. Her comment about buying the Esprit was "It's cheaper than you getting a girlfriend in Calgary - and it had damned well better not help you find one."

Draw your own conclusions.

Mid-life crisis is an invented concept, like the "male menopause". It makes certain sections of humanity feel better! Another form of denigration, which is becoming all too common these days. I'm with Trapper John on this one..I never made it out of adolescence! Has anyone ever heard a man say "Why don't you grow up?!!"? ....what?!! And have a miserable, joyless, dull existence....which would seem a major part of the "growing up" option.

My old chum Bonzo (a real old Richmond character from the mad Sixties) always says "Grown ups? Seen them. Don't want to be like THAT!"

Still don't know what I want to be when I grow up either. And regarding the car, I must have been having a midlife crisis for the last 31 years when I began lusting after the Esprit.

Glad everyone's with me on this one.

As far as crises are concerned, I have one of these most days but its usually solved by the fridge on getting home.

Mid life? Dont suppose I'll know when that is until I die. Hope I'm not past it yet!!

So, why buy the Esprit? Not to feel younger, thats for sure. Does make me feel special though and privileged to own a piece of cult motoring history.

So, a mid-life crisis car(MLCC) would be one you buy to 1. feel younger and 2. make people thing 'wow what an amazing car, the driver must be amazing too. I want him/her'

Unfortunately, when we DO see a person in a MLCC I think most of us think - 'thats abit sad' or 'what a kn*b'

Right, I'm off to shampoo my comb-over.
