Because parts for the 88 engine and anscillaries are becoming hard to find i have converted the engine to se (ac delco) spec. I was planning on bridging from the lucas car harness to the new engine and ecm one wire at a time myself. Just wondering if anyone else has done this, or is there a ready- made harness available? :D

I assume you know that things like fuel pumps, etc. are different....

Changed over from a 1228707 to a 1228708 ECM on an '89, wire by wire, and I can tell you that this was not a lot of fun (went to a charge cooler with supplemental injectors).

John Welch at W.C. Engineering might be able to help you. Believe he has done the mechanical to electronic injection swap before....

Good winter project!

John Welch had a look at it last winter while I was going through the engine and trany. The one he did before was an '86. The 88 is different I guess and more complex. He has been very helpfull, and does excellant work.

Since I posted I saw a mention of someone in scotland who has done this. Wish I could get hold of his wiring diagram! Willing to pay!

That sounds like quite the potential rat's nest of wiring... Have you considered a stand alone engine management system? There are many out there for waste-spark setups, that provide much more flexibility than the factory ecu. Somehow I imagine much of the 'se' spec parts becoming hard to find as well. If scarcity of parts is your concern; do you really want to go through it all again when the se stuff gets hard to find?

It's to late. the engine is finished, it is virtually an SE engine now;chargecooled, fully electronic injection, timing, :D sensors, water cooled new turbo etc. I have an ecm, engine harness. what I need is to bridge from Lucas to Delco.

Does anyone know how to contact Mark MacKenzie in Scotland? He has apparently done what I'm doing. :)

Having converted an '87 to a MoTeC I can say it's a fair mount of work.

Expect a week of studying the schematic of the stock '88 engine wiring diagrams, especially the relay functions in the engine management section (EME). Work out the logic and make diagrams of the rear harness connectors indicating the wire colors at each pin position.

You can retain the '88 Bosch fuel pumps, fuel filter and accumulator.

Now would be a good time to replace the rear harness connectors with AMP pieces available from Painless Wiring or Mouser Electronics.

You'll need a set of Packard ratchet crimpers available from MoTeC if for OEM quality crimps.

The Delco unit will expect to see a wheel speed sensor with a certain number of teeth per revolution. I'm not sure what will occur if it doesn't.
