The check list from Lotusespritworld is a good starting point.

The rest of the response may depend on your mechanical ability / knowledge of cars ion general. If you can clarify that then I'm sure people can tailor the responses to your situation.

Best of luck, and if that car isn't the right one for you, walk away and find one that is.

Definitely find a lotus specialist or dealer near the car and pay them to do an inspection before you buy! it may cost a couple of hundred quid now but may save you thousands in the future. The AA / RAC inspections are not up to the job. definitely get a Lotus guy! good luck. and may the force be with you.

Here is another good source for information on buying an Esprit: http://www.espritfactfile.com/indexs.html

Even if you cannot find a Lotus specialist, at least have the car looked at by a good mechanic, maybe do a search for a buyer checklist. When I bought my car, they gave me a checklist that covered everything.

White is a great color!

Keep up posted!

An Esprit can be used as an everyday car. Several forum members do just that. Be prepared to get it sorted, mechanically first and keep on top of regular servicing and maintenance and it should be good.

One thing about the clutch, though, the flywheel may be scored and causing the clutch to wear too quickly and new flywheels are expensive. Or the rear oil seal may be leaking oil onto the clutch and causing it to slip. The clutch should last as long as a normal car's.

As Trevor said, the clutch should be lasting for tens of thousands of km, not 500. All of Trevor's suggestions could be the case, or adjustment, or the flywheel has been machined incorrectly. The flywheel of the Esprit is stepped so that there is more pressure on the friction plate, if that has been machined flat it probably would be at the end of its life as soon as it is fitted, start to slip and be gone in just a few drives.

I have found the Esprit to be quite reliable, if you don't abuse it and stay abreast of any problems that do develop. My 90 SE has the original clutch, though it only has about 50000km on it.

Two recommendations:

First, you should either be a competent amateur mechanic, or be good friends with one. The Esprit is definitely different, I wouldn't trust it to just anyone.

Second, have some form of backup transportation. If it does develop a problem, you may need a couple of weeks to obtain the necessary parts.

The beauty of the Esprit is secondary to the driving experience. Once you have driven one, everything else feels like a truck.
