rocket63
Latest news after a fantastic weekend! The world record for number of Lotus cars in a parade was broken! A new record of 436 was set, subject to confirmation by GWR. Over 100 cars, including some of the race cars, didn't make it onto the track. This turned out to be a godsend as the circuit was full, next time we need a bigger track! Once the record has been ratified by GWR, organisers will contact everyone and arrange to send a copy of the certificate and a car sticker. It is estimated this may take upto 2 months. A video of the event will be availble in the next week and a full write up will be posted on Wednesday. Advantage
Over on SELOC there's some confusion as to whether they should be counting the Lotus Carlton which took part. Obviously, I've happily thrown my two penneth in and mentioned that it says Vauxhall on the V5 document....
Dave Eds
I heard that before the attempt begun. Did they count the Evora Pace Car too? Quote Dave.
Paul C
The Carlton has a Lotus type number, Eg: Type 104 Lotus Carlton/Omega Type 105 Esprit SE (SCCA) Type 106 Esprit X180-R Type 107 Formula 1 etc... Hence it's a Lotus IMO?
andydclements
Next you'll want us to count the Elise as a Lotus As GKP, it's a Vauxhall model called the Lotus Carlton, if it was a car sold via Lotus dealers only, with Lotus on the V5 as the manufacturer then it would be a different matter, but if you include it you then start to have to consider the other cars that Lotus have had a hand in, the VX220, and all those that have carried the "handling by Lotus" badge, or those that haven't even had that, but were engineered by Lotus. There has to be a cut-off somewhere, and the manufacturer stated on the V5 seems a sensible place. It's not that I don't like the Carlton, I think they're great, and a a fantastic showcase for Lotus ability, pit one of those against a modern German saloon and the Lotus will at least give it a good fight despite being 20 years its senior, in many cases it would win round a track. That shows it's a Lotus at heart. I even pulled left and slowed down to let one pass me on the way to Stanstead.
Jonathan
Oh c'mon this vauxhall / Lotus thing is old news - we had that before with the Brands Hatch previous record. The OGWR recognised that the Lotus Carlon/omega is a Lotus car, becuase of the name and the chassis number has it's assembly factory as Hethel - end of story I'm affraid. Advantage
Tell that to the Vauxhall VX220 owners.
Jonathan
But it's not branded as a Lotus or badged as one. Same way the Tesla isn't branded as a Lotus but really it is - same applied to the VX220, even though the VX220 is the Type 116. As long as it' a Lotus 'xxx' with a chassis number that says Hethel on it it's a Lotus. Ins : Lotus Sunbeam / Lotus Cortina / Lotus Carlton Outs : VX220 / Dodge EV / Tesla Roadster Quote facebook = jon.himself@hotmail.co.uk
Advantage
Lotus Carlton is the model, in the same way Carlton 1.8 GL is the model. Vauxhall is the manufacturer. This is stated on the V5 and was the entire point of the GM gameplan for the project. Back in 1990 you would go to a Vauxhall dealership to buy one, not a Lotus dealership. Morally you're right. Technically you're wrong.
Jonathan
Taking the Carlton as an example - it's a Vauxhall car finished by Lotus essentially and re-branded - it bears the badge (as well as the opel badge I must admit) and on the back it has Lotus Carlton. This is exactly the same as what Tesla do in reverse, they take the car Lotus produce, finish it off and brand it as a Tesla Roadster (same with VX220) End of the day the ppl at the GWR thing accepted it opn those grounds. rogerch
The MK1 Lotus Cortina was a Lotus, built at the Lotus factory. The Ford Lotus Escort was a Ford, built at the Ford Factory. If Lotus built it and it Lotus in the name, then it's a Lotus, notwithstanding Club Lotus Australia still recognise the Escort as a marque car? Kimbers
Hmmm it's badged a Lotus in 3 places and has the ACBC badge on both sides. It's more of a Lotus than some of the Modified cars I saw there. Some had Vtec engines (not even badged "Performance by lotus"). And a certain Andy Clements has a G car shell on an S4 chassis so you want to be picky is that a Lotus? Cause it isn't an approved mod..... Either way I think certain people should be banned from commenting as they didn't even show up (Graham and Jonathan) Quote Possibly save your life.
