I have voted yes, i do think it was successful.

I think its was bang on for it's era when you look

at the italian cars of that time. :)

The debate started on the new Esprit thread where

i stated that although i like them both, i think the first

Elite is the one that is more desirable now. This was a

reference to how i think any new Esprit will wear it's

name compared to the original Esprit we all know and

love. Just wanna make that point before i get branded

mr 501 basher!!!

Hey suprise, suprise I do think it was both successful and a total shock to car buying public at that time. Can you imagine with Mk 1 Escorts etc and then this popped up. Whether you love it or hate it you gotta admire it's balls.

uggh... that's really awful...

I like the Eclat/Elite/Excel though. Personally I prefer the Elite to the others. Chopping it down down to make it look more normal didn't do much for it.

Quirky and cool. Ugly the good way, not the new Europa way :D though the Eclat and Excel look too normal...

You beat me to it Mark, I was just going to post that image, forgot it was on your site!

IMHO when updated to S2 guise with the Speedline 4-spokes instead of the old frisbees the car took on a much sportier look. Its one of the reasons I love Lotus so much as a neighbour had one when I was young and impressionable.

Speedline 4 spokes never struck me as looking good on the Esprit, especially not after the original Wolfraces, and having been followed up by the BBS. But they look great on that Elite.

The lowered station wagon look actually isn't that bad at all if you look at it long enough.

IMO the 501 was fantastic and a real exotic, rather like the Bitter SC or Aston Martin Lagonda.  It was the car that got me into Lotus (I had a red Corgi car when I was a kid).
