Remove shifter

Hello all,

I need to replace the rubber boot to keep the smell out. How do I remove the shifter so I do not have to cut the new rubber boot to get it over the shift knob.

I have a 93 SE US version

Thanks to all and Merry Christmas

Very simple. Just remove the screws on the center console storage tray and the center console cover should slip off. There's some velcro holding the front section of it. Slip the cover and leather boot over the shifter knob. To remove the shifter knob, remove the bolts holding the rubber boot and there should be a single pinch bolt holding the shift lever. Loosen the pinch bolt and the shifter should slip right up and out.

Good luck.

As you can see, we haven't replace this part. It's a real pain and you have to be careful as it splits really easily when you're putting it over the gearknob.

After removing the tunnel cover you could remove the pinch bolt that holds the lever in place and try putting it on from the bottom but I would suspect you will still need to enlarge the hole slightly to get it on without tearing. Probably easier and less risk to just slide it over the knob.

Be sure to use some lube like vaseline on your knob.

You just have to make sure you trim enough rubber off the top so that it still gives an airtight fit - which is an art in itself.

The finished (successfully installed) photo is in my garage area.
