Heat Shields

Recommended Posts

Hi,

During my last service I found that my engine heat shields (the one that stop the engine mounts melting!) were missing - probably removed during the previous service and never replaced.

Does anyone happen to have any they want to flog?

Cheers,

Chris.

I've heard that it's virtually impossible to fit them with engine in so someone told me.

I will ask my local Lotus Specialist as he has a spare V8 in for breaking.

I can confirm that its an engine out job. I had a really bad rattle which was traced to one of the heat shields and the workshop recommended we cut it off and then replace it if/when we need to pull the engine.

LEW's heard of a few V8 that have had them fitted without removing the engine. John Hazzards done it in hemel from memory. But I don't think he works on Esprits much now! Worth a call around the specialist to see if it can be done without removing the engine.

Cheers Kato,

I know that the turbo shields are difficult/impossible to replace in-situ (when mine split I had them welded rather than replaced) - If anyone can recommend a procedure for removing and replacing the shields I'd appreciate it.

Also, any luck with your mate breaking the V8 for parts Dave?

Cheers,

Chris.

I will ask this morning. I has one of mine come loose which was simply and corroded nut. A friend of mine had a snapped stud. The garage simply put a blob of weld and it has stayed there ever since.

I would avoid taking the heat shield off, try tack welding it or anything to keep it in place.

I've heard there a more than two heat shields but i could be wrong.

Kato, John Hazzard had a race car with no engine walls either side of the petrol tanks, no boot or internal trim. Maybe with the lack of these, he was able to replace the heat shields perhaps?

It can do done instu Steve Williams is your man

Offside is much easier than nearside

Both side got loose on my old 02, Bell & C made a hash of it

Merits, once told how to do the job by Lotus corrected the problem

One of reasons they cum loose is the shields are stainless but the bolts that hold them on or not

Use stainless steel bolts

Mark
