SE Exterior Door Handles

Recommended Posts

Yeah, so my door handle snapped off. Whilst I'm ultimately tempted to go the route of the Fish, I need a shorter term solution - or new handles as they are otherwise known.

Anyone got any? Or know of where I can get them and how much they cost? Also, how hard is it to fit them? Fancy doing it for me? Who shot JFK? Why am I still here?

from the looks of two dedicated topics, there must be plenty of people who have ditched their stock ones who should be more than willing to unload them :(

somehow I think that's probably not the case yet however.

so like everyone else says, the basic handle is found on Range Rovers, Allegros, Marinas, TR7/8s etc.

Where are you? Maybe try scouring junkyards. The Lotus part folks ought to have them in stock, but I wouldn't be surprised if a supplier of British Leyland parts wouldn't offer them for cheaper.

Though be careful if you want a matching set, some models of BL cars were given chrome handles :D

I started to fit new doors handles aquired from SJ. I started with the drivers side. Its fairly easy to remove the old handle, but fitting the new handle definately was not. I found that the alignment of the linkage attachment on the new handle was slightly different to my old handle, and this meant all the rods would need adjusting. My late 89 SE rods look slightly different to Kato's, as his appears to have an adjustment in the linkage below the rotating arm which would have made life a whole lot easier. The handle works now but the internal door handle linkage is currently slightly wrong for internal unlocking. I found adjusting the rods very awkward.

I am in no rush to attempt the other side now.

Perhaps somebody can help me here - if you take the handle apart, can the position of the rotating arm (that the downward links attach to) be repositioned? Mine realy needs to be rotated slightly, and then I could get the linkages correct, and would make installation a whole lot easier. A small change here has a major effect on the linkages.

Russell.
