TurboEsprit1987 0
Hello again, Does anyone have or know of where I can obtain a glass roof panel and the engine cover for a 1987 HCI? I am hoping to to find a parted out car. If not, I will shoot the lock off my wallet and pop for the new replacements ($$$$$). Thanks for the help. I am looking forward to rolling my dream car out of the garage very soon. I certainly plan to meet as many of you as possible. Sorry to have been so quite but, I have been on a mission, restoring my BRG 87 beauty. Regards, Nick Edited January 15, 2006 by TurboEsprit1987
markt 70
Hi Nick Know that SJ have glass roof panels for about 450GBP. Insurance on shipping is gonna be a bit pricey unfortunately. Try lotusbits for a used rear tailgate. Price wasn't too bad from what I remember. Just bulky packaging and shipping. Both sources are in the UK. Don't know of any suppliers in the US. So looks like you'll be paying the same shipping costs as me, I.E not cheap. Not knowing what the condition is of your original tailgate, might be more cost effective fixing your existing one. I started refubishing mine this weekend cos it's cracked and bodged with silicone (Thanks DPO!) Hope this helps - Mark
Guest teigan
weld yourself a new engine cover out of thin gauge stainless steel. sadly, it won't be any heavier. the fabricator can use the original as a bending/cutting template. my cover is in good shape, but when it dies i want to go clear yellow acrylic. why yellow? because it'll hide any staining. markt 70
Have a look at this... http://www.lotusespritworld.com/EOwners/DannyKane.html Think Danny's a member on here and did a really nice job on the back of his NA
Guest teigan
looks good. i want my louvers to remain opaque, but i'll be using the same fabrication technique and material as danny. but what's with the delorean style slats in the taillamp lenses? the reverse lights are too dim as it is without blocking out half the surface. slade 1
I've never noticed that the backup lights were dim because I've never been outside my car whilst backing up My chev doesn't even have backup lights (they were optional. The lenses are in place, but no lights). The blacking out of the rear panel does integrate the rear end of the S3 much better. I'm not quite as sold on the louvres, but then again I go back and forth between whether my car would look better with louvres or glass. Guess that's meeting both sides of that discussion in the middle slade Edited January 16, 2006 by slade Quote "It's called a fire hydrant. Guest teigan
the glass is more aerodynamic, but that doesn't even come into play until you're driving past 110mph.
slade 1
I hear the vents are of cooling value as well Edited January 16, 2006 by slade Quote "It's called a fire hydrant. superdavelotus 124
Correct me if Iam wrong but the Giugiaro glass roof has been obselete for quite a few years now. If SJ has any then snap them up and please let me know as I need one too!
markt 70
Haven't had the need for a replacement glass roof thankfully, but it is listed in SJ's 2005 parts catalogue. I see Kato's gone for the carbon fibre one as a replacement.
Evil_Dr_Fish 1
I think you'll find that it's Dave who MADE that!! ..and I was of the same belief as Dave... I had been told that Giugiaro glass rooves didn't exist and that if ever it breaks, you're roofless until someone crashes one and then you' have to get in there first! FWIW - I've been trying to call SJ's all day to confrim or otherwise this report but I only get a number busy tone! Quote "When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. TurboEsprit1987 0
JAE (they don't get any better than these guys) has a glass roof panel, complete with the handles and tongues, for around $1,200. They can get the engine lid for around $440. I think I'll jump on these. Have any of you visited their shop? I am sure we could all overwhelm them but, they are a Mecca for Esprit owners! I picture them as a real life Q Branch. -Nick

Evil_Dr_Fish 1
That bootlid's ok looking but that spoiler was designed by a blindman! INFO: I have spoken to SJ's and they do NOT have the glass rooves in stock. Lotus are the people to speak to about getting hold of them according to the chap I spoke to. I think that means it would probably need to be a group purchase to justify having "x-quantity" made to order? In which case, JAE can charge as much as they like if they're the only place on the planet with ones on their shelves! Quote "When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Michael Blue 0
Let me know if a source does become available. In the meantime, I may be fabricating a custom glass/Lexan roof panel.
