Well I had a brill time at Mike's. Lovely to see the famous workshop in the flesh, complete with all the toys you could possibly want and a few trophies too e.g a Schumacher helmet and F1 wheel!!

Mike couldn't resist fixing a couple of things on the Eclat too, so all in all a great time was had by me.

I also discovered that an Esprit with a fitted roll cage and Corbeau seats is just as hard for me to get into as an S1 Elise!!

Hans, check this out and come and visit, the more the merrier.

Hi Mike

Bibs sent me the link to your build thread. Great to see you're making good progress. The car really couldn't have gone to a better owner for sure - great work, can't wait to see it completed.

Cheers,

Grant

Hi Grant,

Thanks chap - we have a way to go yet, but the parts are all here and it will start to come together in the next coulpe of months. I hope to have the engine running by the end of May, at the latest. I need to put some miles on before I can consider a rolling road set-up session.

Cheers,

Mike S

What a couple of busy days... grounded by lack of flights so piled in the workshop hours.

Some more great parts arrived - ceramic coated turbos and manifolds

f_grq4v41bm_955cf24.jpg

Last special size core plug arrived, so the block is now finally ready to rock (Loctited and mechanically secured)

f_grq4v3uym_5a3cd18.jpg

Also had a load of closed-cell foam arrive, so I´ll fashion some tank cushions and those will be ready to go back in.

Before really making a start on my engine, I had to clear an engine for a Spanish chap. It´s a forged piston engine with upgraded BE shells, so not that different to the one for the 5th Gear car.

Heads on yesterday and today managed to get the front cover and bottom-end sorted.

Maybe I´ll be flying tomorrow.... but I wouldn´t count on it. :D

Outside most of the day, but did manage to negotiate a couple of hours this afternoon.

When measuring the rings on the Omega pistons, I found that the top ring had too big a gap for my B-grade liners. The 2nd gap was almost perfect straight out of the pack; Very strange result..... :)

Luckily the OE top rings are a good size, so I´ll go with a mixed set.

Managed to mate the rods and pistons, but that was about it.

So, the airlines' loss is our gain. Finally something good comes out of the ash! Looks like lots of headway made during your temporary "grounding," Mike.thumbup.gif

You know by now that I am the principal generator of this thread's "dummy" questions, so..........

1. It might be the angle of the photos, but it appears to me that the fuel tanks are of different volumes. If so, I assume this to be a function of the asymetrical availabilty of LH/RH installation space. Might there be other reasons as well? Ironically (to me at least), it appears that the smaller of the two is the one (RH) housing the fuel pump(s), which one would assume would further decrease the available volume. Granted, with the balance tube connecting the two, the actual levels would tend to be approximately equal when less than completely full. But when full, what's your estimate of the percentage difference? (Strictly curiosity)

2. Are the flywheel and ring gear of one [milled] piece, or are they "mated" in advance of delivery?

Glad to see you making significant progress. The clarity of the pictures is (as always) astounding! unworthy.gif

Cheers,

John

Hi John,

Hope your getting to enjoy your car now that the weather is improving?

It is just the camera angle - both tanks are very similar, if not the same in overall volume. The. The RH tank has an additional ´well´ for the primary pump, with the higher secondary pump still sitting very low in the tank.

The flywheel is a single piece affair. I had an engineering company look ar lightening it, but they basically said that it was already very nicely scalloped and they didn´t see any real chances for improvement.

I´m hoping to have this engine installed and running in the car by the end of May. As always, I have a timeline to keep.

Cheers,

Mike S

I completely agree with John that your pictures are of brilliant quality. Not many unsharp angles there.

And when you look at an engine (or any other installation) this clean it gives much more pleasure than hacking about with rusty grimey old parts in the back yard shed ;-)

But one curious question from Norway as well: Do you know about - or know anybody who may know about technical drawings of the two fuel tanks?

I don't have any, so am thinking about having them made locally in aluminium...

Regards

Geir

Thanks for the (always prompt) reply, Mike.

And yes, I am most definitely enjoying my car (immensely!), as we have had long stretches of "California like" weather this Spring and Summer.cool.gif

John

Hi Geir,

I don´t know of anyone who has technical drawings for the tanks.

Those folks who offer fabricated tanks that I know of, are simply copying the OE versions.

Cheers,

Mike S

What should have been a highly productive day, was punctuated by hunting for errant animals. First the Donkey escaped its boundary and went on a wee trek.... then our latest Bengal pussy cat managed to open the door and escape... :construction:

I did find a bit of time to re-organise the workshop thought. I need to make space for another Esprit which will arrive soon - and it is not a V8 ! :animier:

On the engine front, I only managed to fit the ARP head studs

Mike,

That engine looks imaculate, extremely good finish and pretty sure the owner will be well chuffed with the end result, Very interested on the outside of the cam belt been blue, is this a special coating that the manufacturers put on now or somethhing, less wear, noise etc,

Keep up the great work and look forward to more work on your 5th gear car,

Regards danny
