Thanks Holger. I do intend to replace the springs and dampers, but they have done less that 2000 miles and although the springs have surface rust, they should be okay to begin with.

Managed a few small jobs today.

New rear brake discs and pads

New clutch slave cylinder and pipe

Replacement (harder compound) gearbox mounts ready for install

The Spanish engine was fitted with its new spanky plenum/cam covers

Unfortunately, I´m off to Düsseldorf again in the morning, so no more progress until the weekend.

Cheers,

Mike S

Mike,

Looks great, glad you finally got those arms I sent you and now have them fitted. They are pretty obvious how to install and I doubt you had much trouble sorting them out.

I finally got my pistons back for my car fitted to the cylinders and all ready to assemble (I'm back in the game), so I have a set of hc pistons if your still interested :)

Paul

Ps love the black crinkle finish on the manifold and valve covers, I'm getting ready to DIY on mine.

Hi Paul,

The adjustable links are a doddle to install. I had spherical joints instead of bushing on my last Esprit project, and I felt it made a clear difference in the crispness of the handling.

I just got an image of the finished covers in the standard colours from Lustre Coatings - some more nice work.

I´ve only just got home and have some unpacking of goodies for some weekend progress..... more later...

I´ll PM you about the pistons :wine:

Cheers,

Mike S

Hi Mike,

It is always an exciting moment in the dull of the working day when I see an update notification telling me you have updated this thread. I feel like I did when I was much younger window shopping in model shops looking at all the cool bits of miniature engineering that goes into the R/C models. This feels the same with big boys stuff. I am green with envy of your time to get on with it and the facilities (and experience and ability) that you have. I am always looking to the next update with as many pictures as possible. :wine:

So now I have to get back to the dull stuff again.

cheers

-Chris

  • 1 month later...

I finally have a week off work, so I can make some progress on the project :tumbleweed:

Engine bay ready to receive - all hoses for oil and chargecoolers loosely routed

New clutch pack installed, with Ford 1" spline friction discs

f_grq4w9bbm_df4288c.jpg

Still need to attach the gearbox and then we´re ready to go

More later.

Lots more prep. today.

Radiator filled with coolant..... fresh SRF and brakes bled..... chargecooler pump plumbed....

f_grq4w9bfm_1922354.jpg

Had a bit of a snag on some fabricated parts, so have decided to install engine without the chargecoolers for it´s run-in period.

All the hoses will be installed, but capped off until the rest of the stuff is ready.

On with the gearbox and we´re ready to drop it in the car tomorrow

I have driven cars with and without the revised shifter (98+). I haven't driven an S4 or S4s with the flipped shift translator.

2003 V8 (revised)

1999 Sport 350 (revised)

1989

1989SE

1990SE

1991 X180-R

The revised shifter feels pretty good, more direct, more notchy, less rubbery. I like it.

Most of the translator cars feel pretty bad. Occasionally they can feel pretty good, when adjusted properly.

None are as nice as my Acura RSX Type-S 6 speed though... (similar to the Honda Integra Type-R)

The early translators, pre S4, don't feel as good as the flipped ones. I haven't driven the final version like Mike's. It does look like it would the best and very similar to most manufacturers' current cable systems.

Yes Honda systems can be fantastic. The s2000 has the tactility of a rifle bolt and is probably the best of anything ever done with a conventional gearstick.

Had a slight halt in progress for a cambelt tensioning job on Fabrice Roels V8. It was just over a year since the last tensioning and the LH belt was very loose (<30 Hz). Lovely to see the car again and in even better shape

As usual, Fabrice wanted to do most of the work himself and we were able to do a few other small jobs at the same time.

f_grq4wa5bm_6df71bf.jpg

After all of the work was completed, it was finally time to say farewell again. See you next Year !

f_grq4wa75m_5154a50.jpg

I finally got around to swapping the tyres over to my nice OZ Mags (thanks Bibs !). Looking forward to getting them turning over the next days

Just for interest, here are our two latest additions on the dog side. Two lovely boys - Charlie (adult black) and Frankenstein (black and white puppy). Hopefully, these two will Father the next generation of pups from Naughty Newfs. :animier:

Firing of the engine is now planned for tomorrow.

Cheers,

Great day - the engine lives !

Started by removing plugs to help with spinning the engine and establishing oil pressure

f_grq4wa79m_a160e44.jpg

I´ve used my link pipe to take the oil cooler circuit out, so 4 long pulses on the starter and we´ve got oil pressure

f_grq4wa78m_a2cad1f.jpg

Fitting of the exhaust was a little problematic, but it´s all on now and looking good - the system is practically identical to the one I used on my Project GT1, so I´ve got high hopes

f_grq4wa7bm_9df95d6.jpg

Hook-up the OBDII and we´re ready to check things out....... PO1100..... primary fuel pump out of circut and not priming

f_grq4wa7cm_08f3bec.jpg

I´ve never seen this car running, so decided to check the pumps and relays - all good

f_grq4wa85m_4bb6c37.jpg

Noticed the absence of the Inertia Switch - which was displaced by the cage. Found the connection and shorted across the pins - voila - fuel pumps priming

f_grq4wa87m_eb1dfa9.jpg

..... but :censored: one of the primaries is leaking ! Off with the plenum....

f_grq4wa88m_dfe7e3e.jpg

The injector top o-ring had been slightly pinched and was not sealing properly

f_grq4wa8am_841020b.jpg

Once everying was replaced, the engine fired on the first start. Fan-bloody-tastic !

Sounds absolutely lovely

f_grq4wa8cm_8baabe4.jpg

Ran the engine for 30 minutes and bled-out the coolant systems. More excitement tomorrow.

Cheers,

Mike S

Thanks Colin,

One of my boys did take some footage on his fancy camera. If is good, I´ll get it up tomorrow.

There is a long way to go yet. I´ve got to run the engine in before getting is recalibrated for a lot more power. Hopefully, this time next month, I´ll have the chargecoolers plumbed and have a lot more miles on the engine.

Cheers,

Mike S

First road test today.

A lot of fluids - over 16 litres of coolant / 10 litres of run-in oil and 3 litres of gear oil

f_grq4wadbm_08bb6fa.jpg

Drop out the dry-break link pipe and connect-up the oil coolers

f_grq4wacim_9be47d6.jpg

Fit the adapted boot floor

f_grq4wadam_1999a9a.jpg

Out we go......
