Cleaning mating surface of the block

Recommended Posts

What's the best way to get the glaze and crud off the top of the block? I obviously need a clean flat surface for the head gasket but I don't want to damage it in the process. So far I've been using a piece of softwood but some of the crud is a bit more stubborn than that!!

Thanks, Paul.

+1 for Andy's method. Lay the lade as flat as you can for the most part, so it doesn't dig in.

I use the end of an old steel ruler, with the ruler laid flat...
