mattsav
Well it was like this...... Fix the oil leak, fit a new cambelt and sort the 4th gear syncro out on the 2.2 Turbo engine or....... Fit a Supercharged 4.0L Jag V8 with a 6 speed Audi box.... Guess which route I've chosen
hilly
Hmmmmmmmmmm, I am guessing you bought ex Caral Automotive jag V8 and Audi box from their aborted Esprit project that was eBay a few weeks back, or have you just randomly bought the 2 items separately to start your project ? If it is the ex Caral Automotive bits then they were no where near as far with the project than I initially thought looking at the picture above. mattsav
I've had the engine sitting in the corner of the workshop for about 8 years now and couldn't resist the Buy It Now button on ebay for the box..... Simon at Caral has been very helpful so far....... One quick question (of many to follow....) Does anyone know if the driveshafts fromt he Citroen box will fit onto the S4 hubs? Aluminuim adaptors like Hilly's seem to be easier than Cutting & shutting driveshafts.
matk
I don't know, but I am guessing in case of confusion that you mean a Renault box not a Citroen box? Quote Regards Mat
hilly
The rear uprights between 'G' and 'S' cars are different as on the later cars the drive shaft outer CV joint spline goes straight into the rear wheel hub. Earlier cars have a flange on the back of the upright which the CV joint bolts onto. Whether and earlier CV joint flange (which has the hub spline on the back of it) will fit a later upright is unknown........ Same goes for the inner CV joint, you have no way of fitting your Renault based inner joint to fit the Audi gearbox due to the spline. Without swapping bits about you will need custom drive shafts. bosbon_be
Did CARAL cancel the project? To bad, would have been a nice upgrade.
Nellie
Looks like an intersting engine combo for an esprit, and supercharged to boot!! Can't wait to see how this project progresses. Nellie
mattsav
Just digging the thread up as Ive finally got it back into the workshop. All good projects need to be put on the forgotten shelf for at least a year lol Attached the engine and box and dangled it over the engine bay and it looks like its going to fit. Just need to extend the enging crane as its not got enough reach at the moment......

Rich H
Clearly it's nearly in then... I assume there is an adapter plate in there? Quote Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress Porsche 924 Turbo - Parts chaser Smart Roadster Coupe - Hers
Advantage
Just think, if you'd have done the cambelt and fixed the oil leak, you'd be driving the car now.
mattsav
Ye there's an adaptor plate joining the two together. Id measured the size of the hole and the engine/gearbox but was very relieved when it actually fitted into the hole!! True, I could be driving around with the old engine but I think the supercharged v8 experience will be worth the effort (well I hope it is...) mattsav
a quick update..... The engine cover wont fit with the supercharger & chargercoolers fitted Never mind, just an excuse to fit a suitably large turbo and make up a decent charge cooler as the jaguar ones are known to be restrictive. Ive made some tempory engine mounts, gearbox linkage (the audi box used a rod to the gear lever) and brackets to fit the Peugeot alternator and the air con pump (which I think is off a Fiat van). The V8 didnt come with any ancillaries and I had the alternator & pump anyway. They have the right pulley type and the air con pump looks to be new. Now Ive got the dimensions I can make some nicer looking bits out of ally..... Does anyone know what bhp the std Lotus fuel pump is good for? silverfrost
Matt, Pretty sure your pump will not be up to the job, Just use it as a lift pump and fit an external high output pump anlso it always you to fit nice alloy unions which are well recommended with these type of conversions, Also not sure sure what fuel swirl pot is fitted on the car as its later than mine but an alloy one with a decent capacity would be good say 1 litre some track cars even use 2 litre as it stops fuel starvation under hard conering etc. The turbo route will be interesting and should so some decent bhp, pitty your not using the supercharger, I would love to do a turbo car, have thought about ditching the V8 in my project car and using the old audi 20v 5 cylinder turbo unit but murphys law there are no used engines about when you need them Good luck with the project and look forward to some updates with some car porn pictures Regards danny Quote A
