Hi Tony,

It's a Stevens or exactly what you've written Esprit Turbo. An S3 is a wedge shape that stopped production in 87 and the S4 is a 1993 rounded bumper model. It is confusing as you assume your model is either one less than an S4 or one more than an S3.

Regards,

David

Looks like a carb'd turbo identical to Sparky's, or a Golf. They'd just finished the NA version of that car and people were buying the injected SE at the time but your car was a slightly cheaper and more burbly option, they will still made for some time, not everyone jumped on the EFI (and 50+ BHP) bandwagon straight away.

I hope you're goes as well in a straight line as well as Sparky's purrs on those lovely carbs. Congrats on the new car btw, it does look lovely

Tony,

...and see here you thought you were in for the worst. I recall when I first started to search for my Lotus just how confusing it was. As the years progressed on the production it seemed that models began to cross over...was quite confusing...Hope you are enjoying the car...

I'm in trouble, totally lost in this S4, MK9 Injection malarkey..... Let's back track on why i'm so thick on the topic...

Two years ago i opened a company and it's doing well, at 46 my boyhood arena was the Esprit and the Countach, last year i looked for the Countach but they were all donkey's, after seeing several i abandoned ship for the winter cos they were utter pants with a price range of 10k to 30k?

Last month i resumed my search and the Esprit appeared, seemingly unmolested with a full history and at the right price, i paid the asking price so not to insult the seller and here i am, some 20yrs out of touch with a 1990's supercar.

Most would think it's criminal i don't know what version i've bought but in my defence it's the one i fell in love with when my willy was little, lol.

Kick my cat i'm still not sure which version i have? Seemingly it's right on a year change "typical".... From the picture can anyone tell me if it's an S3..... If not i'm going to kick my cat again.

A fluffy cats dot is in jeopardy now so unless i get an answer Tigger will be seen on Heathrow's radar...... Only kidding.

It's an 'Esprit Turbo', no 'S' anything. If anyone asks you what car you've got, tell them it's a late Esprit Turbo.

Is it this the car you own? It's been on Pistonheads recently. If so, it's a nice tidy example and I've seen it around many times (I took this pic in 2004). It's been through a few dealers (including unfortunately UK Sports cars).

If you want to give it a label, Lotus called it the X180 when it was in development. So I reckon Lotus Esprit Turbo X180 is what you've got, same as mine. For some reason which is a mystery to me, the insurance companies here in Australia refer to it as an S5/5, which is complete bollox but there's no arguing with them !

Tony,

Nice to see you have an Esprit, surely my S3 and Sparky's Stevens couldn't have got you that excited when you set them up? I am booked in on Tuesday at 2pm with a different car for you to sort and will try to explain the differences in Esprit then.

Regards Trevor

Don't want to insult your intelligence, but have you checked the tyre pressures?

By the way, "pants down," "wet dream," "tiny willy." This isn't a sex site. Only car porn here.

Tyre pressures followed by the steering rack which is also common.

Mines like steering a shopping trolley.

You might rue the day you didn't buy a countach for £30k, seen the prices recently ? Try double to treble - I nearly bought one but bottled it - could have bought my Esprit 5 times over by now...

but the handling is dire

Tony, did you get the maintenance manual with the car? If so, then follow the procedures for torqueing the various suspension bolts etc, paying particular attention to the bit where it says that this must be performed with the weight on the wheels as this has a big effect on handling characteristics. Do this before you start thinking about replacing anything, it made a big difference to Sparky's handling. If not, then I'm sure one of us can provide the right values for you, or we can pop in to discuss it with you (I see that Trev is due to visit on Tuesday.)

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice.<br />

In practice, there is!

Australian cars received these designations:

1988-1989 - Series 5

1990-1992 - Series 6

Then the S4 came out in 1993

Also, we had Bosch Injected cars from the last S3's onwards. No carbs came here. Yes, that's right - injected S3 HCI's. Only market to get them.

Yeh thats about right, but due the registration process back then, they stuffed the lot up. Back then you did not have to stamp the compliance plate until you sold the car... There was a big thing about it, I have an old newspaper clipping.

The 1988 -89 build was federation spec and only 25 were imported. 10 were presold and the other 15 repossessed due to the stock market crash which sent Lotus Melbourne broke.

There they sat for two years before a guy called chapman came in and bought them all for resale. (no relation to the great man)

These were labelled as S5 and were bosch injected with citroen transaxle where as our S6 (SE) had the new electics, renault box and the new chargecooler.

HTH
