$1,000,000,000,000 found in Afghanistan

They've just got to dig it all up first.

Is it odd that there are people hanging around with soldiers checking for mineral deposits? I thought wars were about shooting people, not mining! Should this come as a surprise?

I find humourous the comment:

" Early attempts to harness Afghanistan's mineral wealth have been hampered by corruption and poor security."

What has changed now ?

Had to be some reason for all the military stuff....also interesting that there seems to be large oil reserves near the Falklands.....

No real suprise, no.

The issues over Afghan have spanned centuries becuase there was no viable economy there apart from opium which suprise suprise was run by the warlords.

The idea in afghan is to enable the county to become more self reliant with a viable economy - thats the reason and the only reason why the British are in Helmand and no-where else, is to help intorduce a menas that the Afhgan people can feed them selves becuase it is one of the only means to grow food in the country (again previously used for growing cash crops...poppys). Taliban are targetthing things like this (power stations, convoys etc) to make the country unstable becuase thats what funds their regieme.

So a find like this is immensly important, providing afghan with something other than a place for war and drugs will help them get out of this viscious cycle and help their people stand on their own two feet and hence why it'll attrack a large security force.

They look like Spanish troops to me (side flash, G36's and all) they're likely role would be securing that.

Don't hold your breath. Mexico is sitting on some pretty fat crude reserves, but a culture of corruption has insured that it hasn't contributed measurably to a stable life for their citizens. Already, China is all over those Afghan mineral reserves. And they have no qualms about greasing whatever palms they have to, or leaving behind whatever environmental or governmental wreckage they have to, to get what they want. It would be a shame to see that happen, after both the US and UK have sacrificed so many of their young soldiers to try and stabilize the place.

Sad fact is - democracy is more than a constitution and a series of laws, it's a state of mind on the part of the citizens. Easy for us to say, with centuries of democratic institutions that we have come to place faith in. For countries that have not had democracy, it's a long and painful process, and the people don't always recognize the responsibility that comes with choice.

Theoretically, the Palestinians in Gaza were free to vote for whomever they wanted. Realistically, when they elected the radical and violence prone Hamas, they bore the responsibility for how that government conducted itself. Exercising free will is the first step in democracy. Choosing wisely after suffering the consequences of a bad choice is the second step.
