Car going in for service

Recommended Posts

Have just booked my car in for a B service and MOT. Means I will be without the car for 3 days :D but I do get a courtesy car and hopefully everything should be alright and set up for the summer :D

Well took the car in today - they need it for 3 days

Had a phone call at lunch time - needs new tyres on the front, a new exhaust, new front brake pads and a new upper ball joint to pass the MOT.

Also they found one rad fan not working and the brake discs need cleaning.

My wipers apparently don't work on fast speed  (never been out in the rain so don't know!)

They are also going to change brake fluid and anti-freeze

So skint for the next few months

I'm approaching 36,000 miles. Could someone tell me what servicing is required in detail. As I may do it myself. Thanks.

On the V8 this is the B service at 36,000 miles. I would tell you what is involved but the manual is with the car!

I do know that they change the transmission fluid at this service.

It is my understanding that atleast every 2 years the "B" service should be done. Change out all fluids (tranny, coolant, brake fluid, oil, etc.). Inspect everything brakes, hoses, etc.

My car recived this this service in Sept. and it cost me aound $950US. But the tranny fluid is very expensive here in the states.

'B' service is every 6 years or 36,000 miles.

Got the baby back today - all running smoothly, however, the wallet has been severely lightened

New computerised MOT with complete emissions printout

This was a 'B' service - 11 hours labour + extra time for the cambelt tension checking. Then need to add the parts - tranny fluid, oil, filters, etc.

'B' service came in at

Yep

Had it replaced with another sports exhaust - I did consider the straight pipes but I like to keep my cars standard (and it doesn't annoy the neighbours as much!)

I'm tempted by the fed style exhaust when mine needs replacement - I'm not sure how good it would look with the standard rear lights though ... well, I hope I don't have to make the decision this week for my MOT!

ARGH ... All I wanted was an MOT and a stamp in the service book to keep the warranty valid, then I get a phone call saying something pops out of the gear lever mechanism when they select reverse .. and it did it on the MOT ramp.

It's funny how it never did this in the last year / 1800 miles with me driving it. I'm now waiting for an update.

Is it just me who hates sending cars to dealers for servicing? :P

The service technician said the only major difference between A and B service are as follows:

Change spark plugs, change coolant (should be done every 24 months), change tranny fluid, change PAS, clean/check air filters, check cam belts, repack wheel bearings.

I think in the US that Lotus US checks the tension of the cam belt during every A service and there is no charge (but I purchased my Lotus new from the dealer and the time to change the cam belt is at 102K miles {if you believe that}).

The service technician recommended to me that every two years change all fluids change sparkplugs and check the brakes, filters etc. I think this is only good preventive maintenance in my opinion. But I usually on bring my car in for service once a year (every 6,000 miles). So it is either $500 for the A or $1000 for the B.
