A portrait of the Elise as a small dog

Recommended Posts

I'm not a dog person but i really like Jack Russels

jack-russell-terrier.jpg

I think it's as that despite their tiny size they don't think twice about having a pop at a dog five times big as them.

:(

Well, i was heading off to snetterton with the elise packed up with tent, sleeping bags, ground sheets, coats, bags, umbrellas and of course badmington rackets. I got ten miles from home and found myself at some traffic lights on a dual carrigeway behind what i think was one of these:

2010-porsche-911-turbo-s-rear.jpg

(i'm not that clued up on german cars as i plan to live out my whole life and die without owning one, but i think it was this, but i swear the one i was behind was much wider with a long body length wing?)

Anyhow, i joked to Vicki 'do you think i can take him?'

The lights changed and he moved, i followed, then he actually used his throttle and started to pull away like a rocket...

I think it was as i changed to third and floored it that there was a classic 'bag o spanners' sound and i was reduced to limping to the side of the road with a dash full of lights and an engine bay full of clunks and rattles. Something in there is busted thats for sure. I was really tempting fate writing this two days ago:

Ten years of esprit ownership and not one breakdown, they always got me home. The elise (in it's second year with me now) has to live up to that.

Here ends 12 years of lotus ownership without ever breaking down. In fact it's the first time i have ever used my AA card! I'm part of the low loader gang at last!! Do i get a badge or summink???

Ah well, It 's a k series lump carrying some 50bhp more that it should with 40k on the clock, you can't do that forever and expect perfection. Nor can you bang the clutch up at traffic lights for twelve years and expect a launch ever time with no tears. So much for my 'cheap june and july', I can almost hear a rolex submariner trying to force it's way out of my watch box and onto Ebay...

Enjoy your cars this weekend guys.

You want me to see if there's an engine in the breakers at the end on my street for you?

Could drag it over here and have a 'let's fit a new engine for PaulC' party :wallbash::thumbsup:

Cheers guys,

Are we not a great little community that there are people just itching to get cracking on fixing it?

It will go to Steve Williams. This car has a sterling full main dealer history from new which includes the many things done by Robert in his ownership, it's been my kinda plan to sell next year and look on to my next Lotus and i want any recent Engine work (hopefully not, but possibly serious/ terminal or even replacement work) to be specialist done, in the history file, and indeed the 'cherry on the cake' of what the car has to offer at the point of sale.

I will finally get to test the AA and post my findings on THIS thread.

Can't speculate on whats gone on in there, it's like shaking a tin and trying to guess whats inside so i'm not going to be wasting my time guessing. Will call Steve and see when he can take it. Having had an Esprit engine go tit's up and need a rebuild, i agree with Rich's "At least another lump is cheap enough" and can say (having done it) it's MUCH easier to sleep with a busted Elise in the garage than a busted Esprit. In fact when i was pushing the Elise into my garage yesterday the single thing on my mind was 'will i make the pub in time for lunch', whereas when my S3 was stuffed i was thinking 'I'll ask on monday if there is any weekend work coming up'.

Like i said to Bibs on the phone, banging through the gearbox at high revs while trying to keep up with a £100,000 car with three times your horsepower is an acceptable way to bust your car.

Well you went out in style. You can now do all kinds of silly stuff with your engine now. Grahm will be rubbing his hands together and wishing (probably) that it was my engine that went pop. He quite liked it when the radiator went.

Mums Jack Russell cross is a puppy off the lead but a tiger on...

Don't suppose you want to buy a working Elise do you  Worth a try...

If you havent already then the DVApower website is dangerous viewing... http://dvapower.co.uk/:dizzy:

Bit late now but in the other thread you are an AA member - the additional 'Parts and Labour' cover is pretty good for fixing stuff that goes bang and isn't too spendy.

When my clutch release fork called it a day they paid out £475 to fix it so has paid for it'self several time over.

Stick a Honda k20 lump in it - next time you'll smoke the porker and be reliability free.

Some bastard with a gold leaf Elise on the way to Goodwood wasted my GT3 on one of the dual carriageways there, it was one of those "oh I dont think so....wtf....oh shit..." moments

I ended up catching him up as we were flying past the traffic and when we parked up I was like "wtf have you got in that thing ?"

The engine is the size of a small rucksack - 1/2 the size of the K series....amazing engine.

0-60 = 4 secs

0-100 = 9 secs (faster than a V8 Esprit)

160 top end if yopu have the balls.

Thanks guys,

It's 'unlikely' i'll be doing anything fancy engine wise. The current setup with DTA ecu, larini, larger throttle body etc, is putting 170bhp and i'll get it repaired to the same spec as thats very respectable for a car under 800kg.

Had already decided to change again next year and have no desire to do the Esprit thing again (eg throw thousands into the car then keep it longer i intended due to that). Think i'm going to go for an early Exige S2, not because i can't afford a later one, but because of its simplicity and lack of gadgetry (eg wind up windows, no traction control, no supercharger etc) is what i like most in my Elise, and i get the 190bhp Toyota lump without the fuss of trying to do something like that in the Elise. Also i hate having the roof off on the Elise and it has the hardtop on all the time, it's the first convertable i have ever owned and the open top aspect means nothing to me. Looks better with hardtop too!

Elise is still in my garage at the moment, i'm making it sit there and think how it's turned a fun weekend into what 'might' be an extremely untimely and unwelcome big bill. Naughty Elise.

Never mind, it will be tip top again sometime soon.

:shuriken:

Jon, i never thought for a minute i'd beat a £100,000 Porsche with a Rover K series, was just a bit of car play in the spirit of what it's all about. If it was a maclaren F1 i'd have done my best to keep up purely to see the contrast...

Is the cost of getting a main dealer to fix going to return the rewards in monitary terms when you come to sell? The reputation of the forum to a lot of the purchasing market would stand for more than a receipt from a dealer which could cost you £2k more to fix?

It will cost much ££££ for a dealer to tell you the engine is fubared even before they source a replacement!

Just a thought, your normally very £ wise so I'm guessing you've already thought of it though...

Read again mate:

It will go to Steve Williams.

The car HAD full main dealer history prior to me buying. But like all my cars it goes to an independent specialist. Steve Races S1 Elises, prepares Elise trophy cars, has a workshop full of Elises and there won't be a single aspect of the work involved that he could not do blindfolded.I doubt many main dealers can claim that of anyone in their workshop.

I won't be paying for 'investigation' He'll know whats wrong just by sniffing it.

Have the party anyway, i'll come in the van/saxo and we can always mend that sodding oil leak on your Esprit!

:dizzy:

Where is punky with that picture of simon trying to slide tupperware under his car, using a washing line prop, in the rain, to stop it pissing oil all over my drive???

Have you driven a yota powered Liz?

I found it downright horrible to drive, the 2nd cam thing really didn't do it for me, misjudge an overtake and it's like dropping off boost:thumbdown:

and the servo'd brakes on the one I drove were nasty too... I'm sure you get used to it but I'd rather stay with the linear (If lower) power of the K series and unservo'd brakes.

OK S1 Exiges are like rocking horse poo and cost ££££ more and then blow up anyway but all the same...

How about an Elise with hard top?:sorcerer:

Paul, sorry to hear mate. Like you said, if engines are tuned it's rare fo them to be as reliable as a standard one.

Still, glad to hear you are considering joining the Exige fraternity! :sorcerer:

Yep, i've driven both N/A and 'blown Toyota Exiges mate. Personal preference can't ever be the same as good advice though, for example i enjoy my S1 Elise much more than i enjoyed my Esprit SE...

So... Keep your Elise Rich!!! :bounce:

Still, glad to hear you are considering joining the Exige fraternity!

Lets not get too far ahead as my elsie is still locked in my garage and busted, and when fixed i'd need to sell and not own a Lotus for a while to trade up.

:)
