V8 Help Please

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Guys, I'm sick of this. Seems I can't get my V8 sorted and am fed up with it. Here's the deal.

Symptoms:

-Turns over and initially starts when cold, but immediately stumbles

and dies.

-Turns over and starts with second attempt and continues running at or

near correct idle.

-Speedometer is bouncing all over the place. When key flipped to "On"

position, speedomeer registers 40-60MPH without engine running. Upon

starting, speedometer registers various speeds but slowly drifts to 0.

The minute I apply throttle, speedometer bounces up to 40MPH even when

setting still.

-When feeding in throttle and releasing throttle, idle goes to around

2,000RPM (even after letting off throttle) and SLOWLY rolls back to

the normal idle range 900-1,000RPM. This happens when I back out

of the garage and head down the driveway.

-After warm up, and turning car off, it will not restart until it

cools. Turns over just fine, but will not fire. Drove it and it

still stalls when slowing down (fortunately it restarted and got me

home).

-No error codes or check engine lights

What I've done:

-New coil pack

-New stock Lotus alternator (fine quality GM/Valeo unit)

-New plugs/wires

-Cleaned and re-oiled K&N filters

-Repaired water temperature sensor plug (broken wire)

-New Bosch injectors with 1cc greater flow rate then stock Rochesters

-Computer is fine as fellow V8 owner installed it in his car and it

drove fine (Thanks Johan!)

-Battery is fully charged and OK according to test at local parts store

Other notes:

-Fuel pumps seem to be operating properly(??) as they are making their

traditional buzzing sound when I flip the key

-Battery bulb on dash indicator light appears to be fine as filament

is not burned out or broken.

-I can find no air leak at any of the connectors but one never knows

Spring is bursting on the scene here and I'm desperately yearing to drive my car. Short of offering my 1st born, any help is greatly appreciated.

Please call me at (314) 889-0572 or e-mail me at [email protected]

No mention of checking the IAC valve?

Would certainly explain sudden stalling on cold and irratic/ delayed return to. idle

tbh because of all the craziness i'd be looking at the ECU.

Given that you've tried it in another car then I'd be following the lines that are supplying it, mayb the ground is poor, the live poor one of it's inputs grounded or shorting someplace.

You could check the back of the fuse/relay box to make sure it isn't green and manky behind it.

Hey, can anyone smell fuel?????

Yeah Feff, I would agree that it sounds like a bad ground.

When I first read the details, I thought it might be a battery issue.... but you've had that checked and it's ok.....

but, what about an earthing issue somewhere?... that may also explain the strange behaviour.... just a thought

Good luck!

OK some progress. The fuse box at the rear of the car was incredibly loose. Tightened the two retaining screws which eliminated the speedometer issue. According to Harry at Viking Motorsports (www.VikingMotorsports.com) the idle air control (IAC) valve can now be used as a paper weight to be replaced by the new one on the way from JAE (www.JAEParts.com).

Let's hope this sorts it once and for all!

Hi All:

New IAC installed and the Esprit is back on song. Even washed it yesterday.

The IAC valve is a Bosch piece. Picked up the IAC valve from JAE Parts(www.JAEparts.com) for $200'ish plus $25 for new gaskets.

Can you see me smiling? Happy Lotusing!
