Momo Wheel on an 02 V8

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I tagged a question onto one of the other steering wheel chats, but that thread seems to be pretty quiet (serves me right for hijacking another thread :P )... so thought I should post on a new thread in the hope of finding some experience out there (I need help!)...:

I have an '02 V8 with the Momo wheel. I am thinking of changing it to the Momo Trek R: post-869-1143787731.jpg

Problem is, I can't find a consistent answer regarding the need for a Boss. Some posts seem to say that any Momo wheel should fit straight on in place of the original Momo item, and some posts say otherwise.

The suppliers tell me that the Trek R has six alan bolts to fix it, but my Momo wheel only seems to have four. The suppliers also tell me that Momo do not make a Boss to fit the Esprit, and I should ask Lotus about an adaptor.

Lotus say:

"The 'Momo Shuttle' (Sport 350) wheel can be fitted to your Esprit by using the eccentric spacer and tapered adaptor.

Momo Shuttle A082H6067S: 308.31 GBP

Eccentic spacer A082H6068S: 16.04 GBP

Tapered adaptor A082H4082S: 137.90 GBP

These are currently in stock, and can be ordered by your Lotus dealer"

Lotus also say:

"the shuttle was the only factory fitted alloy spoked wheel, for aftermarket Momo variants, best to consult Momo sales"

Great, so let's go 'round in circles then :(

Has anyone out there fitted an after market Momo wheel to a Sport 350 or '02 V8?

If so, or if you just know the answer to the riddle, please help!

Thanks

Rob,

My adapter that we made for the Raid airbag wheels might be able to be modified to work but it sounds like the Lotus option would be a better way to go.

You would think that if it works with the Momo Shuttle as fitted to the Sport 350 then it should work with the Trek R as long as Momo didn't modify the Shuttle for Lotus. Maybe Momo can answer that for you.

Nothing is ever simple is it........ :)

Cheers,

Rob - just my 02p (feel free to ignore me) but i think that Trek wheel looks very naff - just like something you'd see in halfords, or fitted to a fiesta or something similar. Factory wheel is much nicer IMHO.

:) - Problem is that the whole interior is very dark... and I prefer a modern touch like Alloy. I've already done the dash, gear knob and gear surround. Now I'd like to add a part-alloy steering wheel to finish it off. I've seen a few similar interiors which look pretty good, and I think the 02 V8 is modern enough to wear alloy!!

Any recommendations on a "non-naff" wheel?

Maybe I should start a new thread - Best looking wheel? :(

the momo "champion" is similar in style to the stock wheel, but with alloy spokes and some nice suede.

Hmmm.... had a look, and yep, that's not bad.

As you say, pretty similar to the original, but with alloy.... like it!

Well, just to complete the story in case anyone is interested in future :)

My friendly local Lotus dealer supplied an adaptor which fits directly onto the '02 boss, and allows any Momo wheel to then mount onto the adaptor.

It seems the adaptor was NOT a Lotus part. I've asked the dealer to let me know part number & manufacturer. Anyone interested in future, let me know & I'll supply the details (if I have them).

Anyway, this is how the finished product looks:

I know it's a taste thing, but I like it & am happy I did it :)

Any thoughts / comments welcome!

Thanks to Jim & Rob for their help.

'

Same as on my GT3 which I removed and fitted the 'snap off ' adapter by drilling and tapping (M6) another 2 holes to fit, giving the correct standoff from the dash.

You will require to acquire some countersunk Allen M/C screws approx 15mm long and re make the horn connections.

I glad you went for the Champion, personally I think it looks better than the Trek R. I can see how it lightens up the interior but is still in keeping with the look of the of rest of it.
