Oh God, I'm so bloody old.....can somebody explain what an "HID Kit" does?? I assume it's something to do with the headlights? Mine are like glow worms...I do have replacement headlight units...which I haven't fitted in, er, 3 years(!) but would be interested in finding out what this is all about....

HID is high intensity discharge.

Basically the light is generated by a reaction within the lamp.

They are more efficient and brighter than standard Incandescent bulbs.

Normally they are are only useable (legally) with projector type lens as due to the nature of the light it requires tighter control.

The light itself is a whiter light toward the blue end of the spectrum meaning it is more remeniscent of daylight and less fatiguing.

As I said above legality is a grey area but I had them in my disco with no issues with the boys in blue.

You want to ensure the colour temperature is around 3200K as much less and they appear fully blue.

Bi Xenon have one fillament which moves up and down with the aid of a motor to give you your high and low beam settings.

They are excellent but you would need to ensure you had the four beam conversion done for safety as they do not emit light instantaneously and need to warm up for best effect.

Hope that helps.

One small correction- higher colour-temps such as up around 6500-7000K are the bluer end; going down around 4500 gets yellowish. I can't imagine going as low as 3200. 6000K Produces a nice crisp clean white, at least in my experience.

No legal issues in USA of which I am aware.

Which Esprits would these fit? Any car that uses a standard-base halogen lamp headlight shouldn't need a car-specific HID kit as plug & play conversion kits are available for all major base-styles.

Now if actual projector-type units designed to retrofit are being proposed, this could get really interesting!

Just to add to the above, the higher the number the bluer but also the less light. 3200K gives out more light and is more natural looking but does not have the blue / purple colour some like.

Legality is a grey area, but provided you are not dazzling oncoming drivers my view is its more important to see where you are going rather than to worry about whether HID equipped cars are supposed to have washer jets for the headlamps. Fitting is not much more difficult than changing the bulb with most kits so it could be swapped back for MOT time if required.

The Tesla ones were pretty poor to be honest. They do have proper projector lenses so my guess is that they were supposed to have HID lights to start but could not due to the silly rules about washer jets etc.

I put these in my esprit 2 weeks ago, massive improvement for dipped beam. Also change the main beam ones too. 90+100% more light than standard bulbs.

The chrome in the light reflectors though is corroded by as much as 30% on one light so this doesnt help. I would be interested to see how much a kit poans out at.

Interested in details/costs too - one of my dip reflectors is corroded due to 'blocked drain syndrome' so even better if it helps cure that.

Be interested Bibs but I think mine are sealed units and if I am going to replace everything I would prefer projector type HID's due to the light output and beamwidth.

Bob, do you know if anyone makes a projector kit for the Esprit? Depending on the cost, I might go that route too.

If I've got this right, we need 2 kits as we've got 4 lights and we need to change 2 of the reflectors.

Here's the deal:

The H4's are £49.95 each + VAT

RHD Reflectors are £ 42.50 each + VAT

Total is £184.90 + VAT and as it's over £ 75,- you will get free shipping :)

Is that good/bad?

Still not entirely sure what the kits are? Are they replacements for the entire headlight unit or conversions for the existing sealed beam? Like many my reflectors are getting corroded and I'm sure not far off an MOT failure. Not really inclined to spend 200 quid and retain the existing light units.

Have looked but not sure the projectors can be mounted in the space available and seeing as its not my area of expertise was hoping someone else would chime in :unworthy:
