Really hot out the garage today but have given the engine and box a good first clean in readiness for removal, sweat and degreaser are a lovely mix 😁

It didn’t come up bad with the small amount of degreaser I had so a trip to the motor factors tomorrow.

I only cleaned it first to not completely plaster my engine strops in thick grime.

Petrol tanks drained, well actually nothing came out of either until I poked a screwdriver through the hole after removing the banjo bolt as completely blocked with rust, what came out absolutely stank and was brown liquid.

One thing for certain is the fuel pump will need replacing if that’s been going through it!

As can be seen they were well past their life cycle so tip here we come!

One had been repaired before, god knows what this is and I have no intention of excavation work 😁

At least I know what lagoon blue looks like now 👍🏻
I have started the mass degreasing work of the chassis and components which will take some time before it’s prepped well enough to paint…TBC

They were the root cause of the poor running which lead to the car being left in that garden for years, they are the worst ones I’ve seen and full of sludge and rust which makes a loud thump when turned in various directions.

Other than a sheared seat belt bolt they weren’t too bad to remove, I did remove the quarter windows but that was just to make turning them easier and not needed.

I’m considering fitting a HC engine as my old car and not interested in selling now I’ve committed to actually restore it, I will see though but have the perfect donor 😉

I need to assess the damage as if it can be fixed without a second mortgage I will otherwise it’s going to lotus heaven 🙄

The engine looks okay and low miles so shouldn’t need too much other than new gaskets, flywheel, clutch, spigot bearing, oil pump housing, water pump etc. Obviously I will check the compression, bearings, valve clearances.

Well the engine is out of the Excel and cleaned up ready for some valve clearance adjustments and assembly into Esprit form. I need to swap the sump, oil pump housing, oil sender housing, front crank seal housing and the water pump.37A03C14-F67D-4D91-908E-320878028E44.thumb.jpeg.332b7be9dd3375a6ca871ca2060f18c6.jpeg

I have encountered an issue which I wasn’t expecting with a difference in the automatic crank shaft.037FECF7-4F8E-4B62-BA8B-B76178D08740.thumb.jpeg.d3c3cd67cc27d27c22491be7cc3256ee.jpeg907 engine with a poorly fitted needle bearing or input shaft circlip failure which I need to investigate at some point.

The 912 HC motor which has a recess machined for the torque converter, everything else is the same including the inner diameter.

Plan is to machine and shrink in an insert to replicate a manual crankshaft, I may use loctite 601 retainer or a grub screw for belt and braces. Just some accurate measurements to take now.

I am putting a 907 back in the excel so that’s going to need the crankshaft machining to replicate the SA variant.

The 907 engine I removed in my Esprit had a completely seized clutch which has badly pitted the flywheel, the clutch was pretty much worn out anyway, the pressure plate has deep pitting as well.

Plan is to fit all new and Definitely investigate the gearbox 🙄
