My new esprit - '77 all original

Recommended Posts

Mine, 165H, has the ashtrays next to the seats.

With regard to mods, I think that it has now become universally frowned upon to modify the exterior of an S1. Purity of the design is what the S1 stands for and with that one must forgive it's shortcomings - mainly engine compartment ventilation. Subtle upgrades - wiring and mechanical but really no cosmetic, apart from wheels , is really all the S1 needs.

For what it would cost to modify an S1 into a clone of a later car and perform an engine transplant, I think I would just buy a later model Esprit.

Lyn, I see you have black filler caps. Is this original?

Gavin,

The original painted filler caps were stolen from the car while at a Watkins Glen GP in the early eighties. Those are the replacements I purchased from the Lotus dealer (about two miles from my house). They wanted $100 each to paint them. Thought they looked just fine in black. Might have them painted red if someone nearby has their car re-painted. Then again, it would stand out like a sore thumb as my paint has faded so much. The caps are original though.

Regarding other cosmetic changes. During our short driving season, I make the following changes to my car; a set of custom made 15" x 7" Jongbloed modular wheels shod with Dunlop SP 9000 215/50-15 on the front. The rears are 15"x 8" with Dunlop SP 8000 245/50-15". The car handles unbelievably well with that set up. The side mirrors are changed to Vitaloni. The steering wheel to a Fittipaldi E-3 on a custom hub I machined. My avatar was taken while in that setup.

I agree with you that someone who wishes to permanently change the appearance of an S1 should buy a later car. As we all seem to agree, there are too few S1's left in factory appearance.

Should of said why I was asking about the filler caps....I have one black and one yellow. I guess one of my was stolen too but under the watchful eye of a PO. I keep meaning to get it painted but just have not got round to doing it. I changed my steering wheel out for the S3 momo which I found on ebay in the UK but I still have the original in mint condition. I would go for a different set of wheels, if I could find them, but I would always hold onto the wolfraces.

Gav

Cheers, Gavin

Does anyone know when Lotus began installing the ashtrays in the center console rather than next to the seats? Was it the other way around?

Each time I see an S1 fully restored, my heart begins to ache to do the same to mine. Eventually reason prevails. Slightly. On another Lotus forum, I asked the group, which way is better? Absolute stock or permanently modified to any degree? Specifically, my car was parked next to an S1 which had been modified inside and out by an American Lotus specialist. The 907 was removed and replaced by a Buick (Rover) V8. The body coverted to S2 specs. The interior completely revised. Wanted to know what other posters thought about the modifications. Don't have a problem with the mods. But is it still an S1?

only a handful of the early S1 had center ashtray. its a high cost item shared with maserati and detomaso . being a cheap ass company, one would easily guess they were replace by more mundane ashtrays.

was your v8 mod done by claudis in socal? i knew he use to have a kit for the swap. i would love to see some pics of your 215-245 15 inch wheel esprit. can u post a few for us please?

cheers

The car in question was parked next to mine at LOG in 2010. As far as I know, the bodywork was LBC. The engine was a owner install. I've been trying to attach a photo for quite a while. Understand the Forum has been having problems with that function. Going to try again on this post. If nothing comes through, I'll wait till a later date and try again. If you go to my "page" here at TLF, there are photos of my cars including a much larger one of my avatar.
