The wife wants a new car

Recommended Posts

Megan needs new wheels. Her current car is a Porsche boxter 3.2 S, and she loves it. But what to buy next. Saturday we looked at a Carrera 2 on a 54 plate, in a titanium colour with red interior, but it just does not hit the right buttons: wide bodied would be better but its expensive, an esprit V8 is not practical for everyday journeys.

Choices we thinks are, 911 carrera 2 (do not want 4 wheel drive)but which one ?or a new Z4, or - shit what else is there !

Not sure that the Evora does it for her, maybe a new europa.

Anyone any thoughts on the Porsche firstly, we want to buy in the next month or so, what best anyone have any thoughts or experiences.

I think it will have to be redish, big wheels, something different. probably needs a rear wing and something with a wow factor.

look forward to any comments

Dave

Did look at a XK yesterday as well, jet black with tan interior, nice car but!. Aston Martin, yes but not sure what the price is for a good one, DB9 well possibly.

This is a could well be but the price is too low, might be buying problems here.

Not sure that the Evora does it for her,

What's changed since the factory visit two years ago Dave? As soon as she steped out of the Evora, she was looking for reasons to offload the Porsche in favor of an Evora. (after driving it - one of the best 'Lotus grins' I've ever seen)

Well she would want it new and with all the bits, so thats north of 60k, besides i have enough issues with one Lotus, let alone 2.

So you're buying new? Or used?

The Launch Edition Evoras are at very low £40s. Take off the £8k Porker swapper, sell the Morgan plate to the owner's club and you'll be in one with just over £30k missing from the bank.

Not to split hairs here, but if she's wanting new, how long do you plan to keep vs. what length warranty does it offer? I'd imagine maintenance costs and frequency are roughly equal for both the Porsche and Evora, so shouldn't be any surprises there. Unless your planning to keep significantly longer than the warranty period, I'd say go for the Evora.

My wife has a VW Scirrocco as her company car and that ticks all the boxes. Looks good, very reliable and very sporty and incredibly quick. Although they are a relatively new car on the market second hand values show they do not seem to depreciate too badly. Servicing costs seem to be the same as if it was a VW Golf.

350 / 370Z and pocket the money for another day?, Fiat arbath 500.....Elise S2 with some creature comforts added?....there isn't that much out there that is relatively new and different, as anything niche seems to have hit the wall, and all the main manufacturers are no soley concentrating on the green / family / small car market..

The Elise would be a mistake in my opinion Davey boy. Crap in the winter and as Megs every day car I think she would be disappointed after the creature comforts of the boxster. They are night and day. As for alternatives, we talked about the Carrera awhile ago. Fab cars. DB7s are silly money ? But look too much like the Jag? Who knows. What does Meg think?

Looks like your shopping list is similar to my potential one late in the year!!

Maserati 3200/3400 is the only one I've not seen suggested ye at your 20K price range!!

If you were around the 40K ish mark then Bentley continental GT, Aston DB9, Aston Vantage!!

What about something completely "off the chart"?

This little beauty looks the part, drives like stink if you want it to but has the engine, suspension and drivetrain from BMW saloons (the M ones that is :-)

Some great responses here, just to put it all in perspective, we are looking at the prime car here, realistically we are looking to spend between £20 and £35k, for the right car it could be much more. The Carrea 2 Paul we like, its just finding one thats not silver and perhaps with a body kit. The black XK we saw was stunning with creamish interior it looked the nuts, but again not sure I would want to drive one as a daily runabout. The elise is out on the grounds that we need to be able to get in and out of it. As for the HONDA Chris, thats a shame we missed it, could have paid cash from the wallet for that - ha ha.

We like the VW scirroco but its not that different to the std everyone has one.

Its a tuff choice really, The carrera we have found is in A1 condition, 2 owners full service porsche history, it looks like new, nut its the first one we have seen.

I will keep you all posted, we will probably go out this weekend to look further.

take care all, Dave

Dave shame about the Honda ;)

Have you looked at www.911box.co.uk or www.911virgin.com, both very good porsche specialists

does it have to be new? what about a Honda NSX? they are everyday usable, and very reliable.

Dave, its a real shame you aren't looking at the Evora or Evora S over the porsche. If you buy the porker you have to become a hairdresser and wear a pink shirt and treat everyone like they are homeless. Whereas if you buy the Evora you become an instant hero and everyone wants you to marry their first born!
