Worst Luck Ever- Need advice 95 Esprit S4

I have been reading this from work and now home i'm still shocked at this. Talk to your insurance agent - they should help you with the process. As for buying a new car that is $10,000 more than the value of your old car - that's up to you, but insurance will only pay you the market value of your old car, not the car you'd like to replace it with. And unfortunately no insurance policy will reimburse you for the "hardship" you've endured, or the aggravation that lies ahead. But your still able to argue the case of like for like, then it doesn't matter how much it cost them it has to be done. For most of the time the company of the guy that hit you will buy you a new car out of court, to save themselfs more money. What may work out as your still end up with your crashed car and a new one. At least then your have loads of spares..

Hi guys.

Just thought I'd give you a little update on the situation so far.

Its been a long road, but now she's soon to be back on the road.

Found a place called Option 1 sportscars, who specialize in Lotus and TVR, and had them do a full restoration.

Unfortunately the chassis was bent, but luckily Lotus had the last new RHD chassis in the world at the factory, so I managed to secure that for her.

Price was as can be expected. A lot, but as another member here said, its more important for me to have the car intact, and not be broken down into parts, or even worse, crushed to a block. Will be picking her up in a few weeks, so will post pictures of the finished result then. One big plus is that the guy doing the repairs has reinforced the normal Esprit weak points, so she should be stronger than ever.

Thanks for your support guys, means alot to me!

Best Regards

Roy

The Restoration was a success, Option 1 Sports Cars in Bromsgrove in England did a marvelous job with the bodywork and reparations to suspension and chassis, plus all the other bits and pieces.

Got it back to Norway safely and got my test drive plates on today. Ready for my first test drive. Initially all is exceptional, and after getting the engine heated up, and driving for a while I go to open up the the throttle a little, start off in 1st gear, from about 15 kph. Throttle about half way depressed and roughly around 4500-5000 rpm, boost building, depress clutch, and a slight thud is fealt, the engine spins freely, slowly spinning down, worried I dropped the transmission for a second, and the gear is stuck in 1st gear for a while. depress clutch again, try it again, still stuck in gear, lift off clutch and no response when I press the throttle, like the clutch is still disengaged. after a couple of seconds, the gear can do changes again no grinding or irregularities, but the clutch is noticably slipping. Im just a Km from my house, and manage to barely limp home, the clutch still slipping, and can start to smell clutch. Manage to get her home, but the clutch almost not getting any friction to the gearbox by now. Im wondering if this can be an issue with the hydraulic clutch system, or if its a gearbox issue (my worst fear).

Any input you guys might have would be extremely appreciated. Not sure If I screwed up somehow, or if its just one of those things.

This is my first Esprit and my first drive in one, so I might have done all the wrong things as far as I know. I just hope its not a deadly mistake I have made in that case,

I know the esprit is fragile in specific places, and did have this in mind while testing.

Congrats on getting the car rebuilt!

The clutch issue could be hydraulic, the piston in the master may not be returning past the check valve so the clutch it's releasing each time.

Could be rusty splines or a lack of lubrication on the throw-out bearing, and or clutch disk, not sliding freely after the clutch is released.

Could be a broken clutch with a piece of metal jamming it and not letting it clamp properly to the flywheel.

The slight thud when you pressed the clutch is what I am thinking about. Is the slave cylinder assembly and the clutch operating fork all still in line properly or has something slipped out of position?

Glad to see it back together and sorted out.

First thing to check is the clutch linkage. I'd be inclined to remove the clutch slave cylinder and any return spring on the clutch operating arm..and see that there is free play on the arm, showing that the clutch is fully released. If not....then persist with the linkage/slave/master cylinder until there is! The clutch slipping indicates that either the hydraulics are holding the clutch slightly operated, or the clutch cover diaphragm spring has failed and not enough force is available to lock the friction plate solid.

is the pedal set up in the right way ?

does the clutch fork move up all the way, as it would have to do?

..all the same questions others have noticed -so nothing to worry after all your adventures so far. from the mechanical point of view is an Esprit an easy piece.

-internal question on the body repair:

have you ever considered to split the body halves on the sideline -and put the body shells back in the factory molds again to make the lamination repairs a little more easy ? You know that the moulds are already in the hand of the TLF community ?? But anyway, the car is on its wheels again -so its all good ..you can concentrate your work on finding the faults from the reassembling.

good luck!

Wow ! - So shiny. Just like a new one.

One small thing to sort though - in that the blinkers have been installed the wrong way around. Parking lights should be on the outside. This is a common issue when repairers replace the bumper, they put the blinkers in back to front .

the problem is -this is not a 'small thing' to sort out now ..as the front bumper is in the way ..and attached to the car still :)

With a bit luck (and small hands) he could manage to turn the inside elements around by undoing the small lower 'square' bracket that is seen in yor front compartement, and does have 4 bolds weldet on it (-it's the one you can feel & see from outside in the radiator duct behind the mesh)

Thanks for all your input guys, shes finally back from the shop, and a lot closer to being in great shape again. Still some gremlins and cosmetic issues to take care of in the future, but I expected nothing less when I bought her.

Yup, the whole clutch needed changing, never got the full story from the mechanic, but it had worn to its last leg, and then failed. So went for an upgraded racing clutch that could handle more torque, and now its all good. Except for other minor details of course as it is an Esprit. Amongst other things some issues with boost only going to 0.65 but thinking thats probably a coolant issue, as I did see the car run a little hot on the gauge on the lower right instrument panel. Havent gotten freescan/espritmon yet, so havent been able to diagnose it yet.

boost only going to 0.65 but thinking thats probably a coolant issue,

If the engine isn't getting up to temperature because the thermostat is stuck open that will restrict boost but I'm not sure overheating will, you should get full boost until it overheats anyway. Also, make sure the Check Engine light comes on when you turn the ignition on as if the bulb has blown that will also restrict boost to 0.65 bar.

Cheers,
