loss of memory

Recommended Posts

I have a Toshiba laptop running Vista with a 60GB hard drive. All i use it for is a light accounts package and e-mail. I keep any photos, music, video etc on external drives.

Lately it has run right out of available memory on the hard drive and i cant figure out why. I have searched the folders and c:users/windows/system32 seems to contain about 40gb but i cant find which subfolder is the culprit.

Surely even vista which I know is cr*p shouldnt need that much memory to run? Any thoughts would be appreciated before I re-install another OS.

Have you run the inbuilt disc cleanup?

Start -> accessories -> system tools ->disc cleanup

That will get rid of temp files, installation files, old restore points (under 'more options'), error logs etc

Try running SpaceSniffer

It'll show you graphically what's taking up the most space on your drive

with all the latest service pack and updates it is quite possible that with your data, apps and the OS and updates that you are a little short of space! - tis my day job so just give me a shout and i'll pop up and take a look for you!, larger new Hard disks for laptops are available for about £30 (twice the size of your existing capacity) so its not the end of the world.

Let me know Jim :)

Thanks for that Fitz......I'll trade your expertise against the framing job!

@ Jeremy.....thanks for that suggestion. i am running it now ( just about managed to free enough space to get it working!). So far system32/spool folder looks like the culprit with 24GB and rising! I wonder what the reason for that is??

jim, I'm guessing you use this machine for you professional printing? the folder holds a copy of print drivers and logs etc. you can clear it out and should be ok. you'll need to.

start > run > services.msc.

find 'print spooler' and right click and 'stop', keep this window open. find the system32\spool folder, and delete contents, click start again.

that should work, in worst case scenario you may need to reload the printer drivers.

:)
