Late model V8 - filling with Petrol

Recommended Posts

When I had my 96 car I would regurlary fill up on alternative sides of the car to ensure both tanks got a good fill fairly frequently.

With my current 2002 car there is only one filler, I only seem to be able to get about

Where the hell do you buy your petrol

The story with the single filler is that it reduced the overall capacity of the two tanks by about a gallon, down from 16 to 15. They didn't compensate the fuel gauge for this so it will never show completely full.

Now, the fuel low warning light comes on at approx 2 gallons so a complete refill should be of the order of 13 gallons. My single filler 98 'achieves' this pretty accurately - requiring almost 60 litres.

But that's costs 60 quid in super unleaded so if you're only spending half that then there's something up with your tanks (does the gauge read nearly full?) or you're getting a very good deal at your garage

May: DON'T hit it with a hammer!

Clarkson: Why?

May: Cause it's the tool of a pikey.

Thanks Neil, thats useful. I filled up tonight, the red light had not come on but it was reading nearly empty on the gauge. I put in 36 litres, just under 35 quid so a little more than I'd said above. As I drove away it was three quarters full, it droped to about half briefly and then went up to nearly full.

I wonder if the guage is playing up

Cheers for the info

Regards

Fred

Funny actually, the guy i bought my Esprit off told me the same thing that you had to fill it up every 100 miles and that you'd only get about

Hey, can anyone smell fuel?????

BTW it it helps, each 'fill up' I normally chuck about 55 litres in there.

There have been past threads about notoriously iffy petrol gauge reading.

I have with all my cars be a bit of a petrol record anorak... I also hate the chore of having to visit petrol stations so I always brim them and run them dry before the next fill up. Filling up when the light flashes sounds good to me and you can also get used to the sort or trip miles the car will do it takes your reliance off the gauge.

I've just had to repair my Petrol tanks I put two gallons in from dry ran the engine up to temperature twice drove a mile to check things over then 4 miles to MOT station and it ran out of petrol just as it passed the emissions test.. LOL... Two gallons 5 miles!

I might be being silly (frequently am) but I believe it is possible for the petrol pump to squirt motion-lotion in (from either side in my case) faster than the tanks cross balance.

Although mine can be filled from either side, if I squeeze the nozzle to full throughput I can easily fail to get a good fill (regardless of chosen filler neck). Going half trigger always gets it nearer full.

Yep

That's my technique - wait until it clicks off - count to ten - then start filling again.

Repeat the procedure until the time between clicks is short.

Personally I always wait for the low petrol warning light to come on - 2 gallons is fair bit to have in reserve. Good for 20 miles even with my driving <_<

If you're filling the tank to the brim you should easily get 200 miles out of it. The fuel gauge might be dodgy, in which case use the warning light. However, both share the same sender unit and if it were dodgy both would malfunction.

So try filling it up and bring a spare can of petrol. If the warning light comes on at 180 miles long after your gauge is on empty, the the gauge is knackered. If you conk out, fill up from the can, limp to the nearest garage and replace the sender.

Oh, and yes, you can usually squeeze an extra gallon into the tanks by waiting for them to equalise before pumping more.

I so loved it some 10 years ago pulling into a service station first time with my mate in his Esprit N/A S2, late one night parking mid aisle filling up on both sides at once...

Then going in with my mate to pay 'which pump Sir?' 'errrm 2 AND 6 please!' so cool.... LOL

Ok boys it's on empty now and has been for a day or so, no sign of the light coming on yet - I do hope you guys are right about this!

What mileage so far? As I've said, from full you should get at least 200 miles. With 15 gallons that would equate to 13mpg.

But bring a spare can just in case :P
