Engine out of the S2

Recommended Posts

Shah and any other owners of a S1/S2 here is what you in for if you have to remove the engine.

I have taken many a engine out of a British sportscar but this was an absolute ass beater!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pictures are from three weeks ago.

I would like to thank the lads at British Airways for the loaning of the lifting straps.............quite nice indeed!!!!

All in all I still love my gold beastie and I can wait to get her back on the road.

Thats what you get for owning a fantastic exotic motor like the esprit, at least you dont have loads to disconnect, i have never lifted my engine out, i think the worst worry would be the engine crane failing, imagine the mess of the fiberglass i think i would cry, :( nice to see im not the only one with lotus badges all over the garage :P

Blimey, its not that difficult. I took the engine out of my S3 a few years back working on my own. And the gearbox was still attached!! Your jails must be pretty cushy.

Erm I can refit my engine in about 15mins and have it all hooked up in less than a couple of hours. Taking it out is about a similar amount of time. But there is a technique.

This is a idealy a three person job for ease.

1 Hoist man/Women

2 gearbox end clearance man/women

3 Corner man/women

This is the most important part of my technique and it makes both the removal and refit a piece of cake. Have someone guide the engine up and out sitting on the top left hand side of the engine bay roof area (passenger side UK, drivers side for most of you foreign devils :( ) lift the cam belt end high until it begins to clear then pull it towards you so that the back clears. Level the engine out a bit pull the hoist back to clear the ca drop it down job done.

Ok back in again.

With the cambelt end of the engine higher than the gearbox end move it over the top of the engine bay. Again having someone on the said corner of the roof tailgate are pull the engine towards you and keep it high. Dropping the gearbox in first, slowly lowering the engine the corner man guides the front keeping it from hitting the paint work and twisting the engine round and down into the correct position. Locate the gearbox mounts first putting the nuts on a couple of turns so that the engine does not move to much. Lower the engine down to align with your engine mounts. If this becomes a bit to much of a tricky afair to cope with using the hoist use a jack and a block of wodd under the sump to fine tune the height. Put in the engine mount bolts. Make sure rear gearbox mounts are seated and tightened not neceary to torque up at this time. Remove the hoist tighten it all down.

Have a cup of coffee and then run around like a mad man puttting evrything back on so you can drive it agian.

If this is not clear enough let me know and I will try to explain it better. :P

Out the first time was a cock up and yes took ages. In and out twice was easy. First in and out was due to cracked liner and piston.

I'll soon be doing a clutch in situe with flywheel change so I'll post a how to guide when I do it. I am working on a website at the moment and will try to include as many tips as possible.

The S1 and S2 are a bit trickier than the S3 as the boot floor does not come out. In fact, the engine and gearbox are supposed to come out the bottom. I.e. you lift the car off them leaving them behind on the garage floor. Have never done it so I don't know how hard it is.

which explains why as I've experienced on my turbo, the motor mounts are positioned as they are, and if the one on the passenger's side goes, the engine falls rather than still having any support below it :(

Good luck with all that, and shoot me a PM if you need help :P

You need to give half of those cargo straps back to the airline and get an engine tilter :(:P

Then the adjustments needed to alter the angleof the engine would be easy to make as you go along.

Think mine cost $60 (worth every penny) :(

Sorry gents, I've been away for a day or two.

Thanks for the advice and the offer for help.

I have never taken an engine out of an Esprit so it was a little of a learning curve....as usual you end up taking more things apart than necessary just to gain access and then later ponder over a pint "why the hell did I remove that".

I hope to have all the belts, hoses, shift bushings, water pump, clutch, and various other bits changed this weekend and then "back in the hole with you!!!!!!!!"

Wish me luck.

Out the bottom!

EngineIsIn.sized.jpg

I second what Wayne said about a tilting bar -- with the S1/S2, you REALLY need to play with the angle A LOT to work the engine up in and out of the chassis!

Out of the bottom huh??????????

I had not thought about that.

Actually removing the engine from the top was easy money.

The thing that kick my butt was removing the A/C compressor while the engine is still in the car.

I did not want to break the lines and risk loosing my dryer and having to go through the trouble of a full purge/air conditioner service. $$$$$$$$$

I split the gearbox from the engine and dropped it out of the bottom.

Blocked up the oil pan on the engine with a huge timber then out of the top with the engine.

Main trouble is, once you've done it, you know EXACTLY how you should have done it in the first place.........then, the next time, you've forgotten....!
