Hose Failure

Recommended Posts

Took the Esprit for an extremely spirited drive the other day. Became nervous when I began smelling coolant. At the next stop the steam was pouring from the lid vents. The car was still not overheating per the gauge , but I assumed the worst. Anyway, I was very relieved to find that it was just a bad hose. (the short one coming straight back off the rear of the engine just above the belhousing.) I had some coolant and tools so I was able to make the repair and drive home. (after modest applications of cursing and hand-burning).

Anyway, my question is this: Have others had hose failures yet? I am wondering if this means it is now time to replace all of my hoses? This is a 98 with 30,000miles. My daily drivers are typically much older than this and I am surprised it it is time for hoses now. (scary proposition considering the number of them)

Thanks in advance,

Rod

98, 50k miles.

Which short hose - the one to the LHS which enters the T part of the aluminium heater take off? Or the one to the RHS which enters the bend part of the aluminum takeoff off towards the T at the LHS?

Mine was the LHS and I suspect this could be a 'design problem'. The aluminium takeoff is not attached to anything solid. So with the car bumping up and down it would pivot on the RHS. This would cause the LHS to push up and down on the hose and the metal pipes onto which the hose attaches would gradually shear through it.

May: DON'T hit it with a hammer!

Clarkson: Why?

May: Cause it's the tool of a pikey.

Just had the same failure. RHS small hose from the cylinder head to the transfer pipe ( Passenger Side on US car ) . Was on a road rally when I started to see steam out my engine vent. i managed to drive the car to a gas station. It only go to 85C so I felt sort of safe. Any way some duck tape and two hose clamps and a quick top off of collant allowed me to make the 1hr drive home. All hoses will be tossed here in the coming weeks. I am guessing the same supplier as the suspension bushings must have been used to make the hoses...lol!!
