nickh
I am quite urgently trying to find a way of getting hold of a 3rd and 4th gear synchro\baulk rings (they are both the same) directly from Renault but all i get from their parts people is "we need a reg number mate" Has anyone sourced this part before The Lotus part no is A082F6440F and i can obtain them from SJ and the like but seemingly at the usual over inflated price My gearbox builder tells me he had "loads" of the Renault bits on his shelf but threw them away a few years ago as there was so little call for them now and he needed the space! If he still had them they would be £20each-SJ quoted £56+vat each and delivery Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Nick Edited November 18, 2011 by nickh
andydclements
When mine was rebuilt it needed the brass ring, the gearbox specialist simply needed to know the gearbox type (UN1-xxx) and then got the part from the Renault dealer. I guess it's just the person you get behind the parts counter at the time.

neal
There are some major differences between the Renault and Lotus spec UN1 variants such as, stronger diff, heated treated shafts, difference gear ratios, etc. However, a lot of the basic components are identical and I believe this includes all the synchro rings. I managed to find my copy of the Renault service notes for the UN1: Unfortunately it only lists the Renault part numbers for the tools used to work with the box, not the actual gearbox components. But it gives full details of the Renault models fitted with these boxes. You could have a look through Autotrader, Ebay, Pistonheads, etc. for one of these models and note its regisatration number and follow up with Renault that way. Certainly if you could get the parts directly from Renault they would be a lot cheaper. However, Renault stopped using the UN1 in its cars long before Lotus did. In fact the Renault UN1 production line was only keep running to build boxes for the Esprit. So Renault may no longer have any spares or Lotus may have bought the all their spares stock to service the Esprit. But it's worth a try to get the synchos from Renault. nickh
Already onto that as well Neal-have a guy at local Renault looking into it for me so should have news either way tomorrow Suspect you're right about them not producing these parts anymore though Fingers crossed!!
