Drive line 'shunt'? - Gearchange/Gearbox/Clutch - The Lotus Forums Jump to content

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

Been busy moving house but I managed to get the Esprit out yesterday for a little drive.

I've had a powertrain 'shunt' since I got the car: when I lift off then reapply power there is a noticable pause and before the power comes in sharply unless I'm really gentle. It feels like there is a massive amount of slop in the drivetrain.

It's not clutch as that is new and it pulls well in all gears at all revs so I don't think it's clutch slip.

Can someone with a healthy gearbox please do a check for me - engine off, put the car in first handbrake off then see how far you can easily move the car. That would give me a measure of 'normal' drivetrain slop to compare mine to. That said there doesn't appear to be any particular slop in the gearbox or CVs.

Could it be engine/gearbox mounts?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Rich

Cheers,

Any way of checking them or just change all 4 of them on spec?

Are they easy to change?

Thanks

Rich

I've changed the engine mounts on an S3 & while it's a filthy job because of all the oil & sh1t accumulated on them it was easy enough to do with spanners & a bottle jack under the sump to support the engine.

Firstly I'd have a look at the transmission mounts if I were you though. thumbup.gif

OK Guys all engine and transmission mounts changed and I still have the shunt.

Shifting is sharper and in-cabin vibration is better but there is still a noticeable gap between on and off power in all gears.

Checked the drive shafts and there is a bit of axial/torsional play in the drive shaft joints.

If I grab the inner joint there is a bit of movement.

Are the joints replaceable/rebuildable?

No backlash in the diff I could feel when it was out a few moths back.

When you say axles...? Are the joints available?

I have never looked into the availability of replacement axles (half-shaft assemblies)... I have no idea if you have to buy the whole assembly or parts or...

I do know people who have broken axles!

may be worthwhile checking the hub nuts are tight, i had to retighten one of mine. if i rember right wheel off put two wheel studs in wedge crowbar inbetween wheel nuts and against the floor use big socket and breaker bar and scaffold pole as these things are tight but can loosen off. i thought my uj;s had gone but after speaking to a couple of places they sid that they had never know one go and i should check the hub nuts, also there will be movement

OK interesting that the hub nuts could be the cause that would be nice! I'll check this weekend - thanks.

The drive shafts are available complete - £600 each!

The inners are from a Renault Espace I think, there's a cross reference on here somewhere. £25 from a breakers.

I thought as much, thanks. Any idea on the outers?

I'll check the cross refs.

Found loads of new Espace driveshafts for around £50 and I was wondering if the outer joint might fit too...

But I'm getting the distinct impression that driveshafts are rarely a problem....

Going to check the hub nuts first.

The outer is unique to the Esprit, I'd not risk anything else there.

OK thanks. It did seem to be the inners that were moving.

Have found a local refurb place and dropped them a line, if the inners are just Espace might be able to get mine refurbed.

I've asked if they can ident the outers but I'll proceed with caution (!)

'The specialists' reckon the inner joints are not replacable - seeing as they come off with just* a circlip I suspect they don't want the job!

*I realise this is probably not as easy as it appears....
