Cambelt Snapped

Had exactly the same happen to my green Esprit Turbo three years back. I was also idling and coasting to a stop when the engine died. Fortunately for me no damage occurred whatsoever and the car has been fine since fitting a new belt.

I will be curious to find out if you will be fitting a Lotus brand belt or using the Gates belt as I have now fitted on all my 900 series engines.

Upgrade today to remove Google ads and support TLF.

'Lotus' brand belt will be fitted. If I could afford it I would have liked to upgrade to HTD pulleys but alas I am on a tight budget

Update

Head and cams back on. Shims shimmed new cambelt fitted and tensioned.

I have refitted the starter motor and had a go at turning the engine over to do a compression test with the engine out of the car.

A partial success. A spare battery with enough oomph 55 Ah was flat and borrowing the rather puny battery from sons 1.1 Peugeot would not turn over fast enough to get a real reading.

It'll be ok to do a compression test with the carbs off, won't it?

A kind offer but the battery is sat in kitchen at the moment on charge so hopefully will have enough amps to spin it over tomorrow

The squirrel pelts are already drying on the fence John.

Almost there,

Just oil, coolant and charge the battery to see if she bursts into life (subject to ignition timing being adjusted)

Update....

She starts and runs.

Now need to get the gear linkage adjusted and should be able to take for a test drive.

some final odds and sods to do but a major hurdle passed

Yup I paid extra attention to the hose.

Also made doubly sure that the bolts that hold the back of the cams are torqued in properly

Final update

Took Sue's car out for a run today :)

Forgotten how fabulous it is to drive.

Just need to bleed the clutch but apart from that she's all done!!

Yup

Major bullet dodged

Probably due to the way the belt snapped. The cam moved forward and fell off the buckets. All of the exhaust valves closed. The engine stalled at low speed.
