Has anybody tried this technique to restore the plastic trim on their car...

I don't know if I dare, just in case I melt them!!!

Paul.

I think this would only work on thermoplastics and not on thermosets such as rubber or GRP. So I dont think there are many thermoplastics on the outside of the Esprits. Well on the G cars anyway?

I was thinking of the front bumper as mine is pretty faded.

Ah, the beauty of the S3 is the bumper is made of GRP (oh and some plywood that separates over the years , fails and means the whole bumper flies off at speed hitting the car as it goes over the front and roof) so to refresh the black on an S3 / TE you just get an aerosol of black paint.

Tony K reckons this stuff is pretty good for restoring the S1 plastic bumper...

But once you paint it you're stuck with painting it forever more.

Well,

I used a rather unusual product , but it works fantastic and the look stays new, even after one year and about 5000km.

It is HG leatherpaint.

This product is meant to recolour leather and skay seats.

First i cleaned everything thoroughly with alcohol , then i used the HGprimer ( a transparant substance) with a small roller., and then I used 2 layers of black HG leatherpaint, also by using a small roller.

It dries perfect even without stripes in the original black satin colour.

I used it on the following plastics of my s2.2: frontbumper, mirrors and triangles before the doorwindows, the ears behind the sidewindows, the b styles, the plastic border around the small backside windows , the licensplateholder.

I used it also to paint and refresh the aluminium windowdoorframes .

As Vulcan has saisd I have read that you can use peanut butter, something to do with the oils in it. I know you can get seal feed from swisswax to restore door trims.

I'm still happy with this (SEM bumper color). It dries thin and evenly, flexible, just the right sheen, is made for exterior surfaces, and I've never had adhesion issues. It's a commonly used product by auto body repair shops here. :)

Tony, do you have to prime the plastic in some way before applying it?

Cheers, Paul.

You can, but for the Esprit's and other plastic parts, you don't have to. It is made specifically for plastics. Just clean/degrease/de-wax it. Rubbing alcohol works great as a final prep agent.

Cheers,

Tony :)
