Yes Bibs , after selling my last Esprit I couldnt bear to be without anything plastic so I bought a boat...a proper one with sails !

Seriously though I would guess some sort of aeriel booster for a GPS plotter, or even for the DSC radio.

Marine style SatNav aerial.

The crank handle Roger speaks of is actually the UHF/VHF aerial mast mount. It was used to lower the aerial for transport. The mount has been designed so that the cable goes thru the mount and hull into the cabin.

Which tells me the boat is less than 38' LOA and no more than 8' beam.( at least in the US ) Usually you will find fixed mast posts on larger boats.

I take it that the SatNav system is not installed in the boat ?

4' on the draft. What is the beam? I have a little over 18'2" on my beam and only draft 4'6". You sure on the draft ? Just curious.

It's always a possibility Sir Trent. My "tender" may only be a 24 footer, but with a 7.4 ltr 330hp I/O I think it will scoot thru the Panama Canal quite handily. That plasma equipped "pansy palace" pictured above will only do 15k tops, which makes water skiing a bit challenging. Not to mention the glaring lack of a helipad. Pftt. I didn't even make them an offer.

Don't forget to stop off en route to the Med through the French canals...I'm on the Canal Lateral a la Loire just before Léré...that's in between Briare and Sancerre. Free mooring, electricity, beer, barbecue and use of workshop.....can't miss the place, it has two dead Audis, a trailer and a broken spinner from the aeroplane on display in the garden.... My Freeman 22' lives in Briare nowadays, and has since 1996; she's done 3 Channel crossings so a 23' ought to breeze across....

Sorry, John, but you're going to have to be a bit more explicit. Is the spinner chrome or matte?

I'm going to have to do a tad more research on auxilliary fuel tanks before I attempt the crossing. Not sure 62 gallons is sufficient, and I'm not keen on flaming out in the middle of the North Atlantic.

The free beer offer, however, is always a great incentive for the required nautical investigations.

The remains of the spinner is painted with a red and white spiral...it has a chunk of one side missing which is, I presume, still in the field by the M11 next to North Weald where it fell after it ripped itself off the rest of the aeroplane. Spinners with that much out-of-balance really get your attention...loud BANG!!! and the airframe started to shake itself to pieces. My one and only real emergency radio call.....had an engine failure in a Tiger Moth once, but no radio in that to call on!!

I plugged the coordinates into Google Maps, John, but this is what I got...

However, I've determined from the satellite view that there is, indeed, a navigable waterway running adjacent to your abode, but for some reason all the placenames are in French. A further search for "Babble Maps" has turned up empty, so I've dragged out some rather dusty French textbooks from uni days to see if I can get spun back up to speed. Will I be making my coastal entry point at Saint-Nazaire or Le Havre? And is there a fee for use of the locks?

Le Havre and up the Seine...keep going...through Paris...up to St Mammes and turn right. Then follow your nose! You need to register with VNF and buy a canal license...this tells you how!!

I'll purchase the VNF license as soon as I can develop an algorithm that can compute the correct "meters squared" figure to use with the rate schedule. The license info page doesn't say whether to use average beam X length or the cosine of the gunnel's curvature, divided by Schrodinger's equation to compensate for relativistic effects. I did take notice of the site's mention of the option to pay a fine rather than become engaged in the legal process for infractions whilst underway. Reminded me a great deal of my younger days in various Mexican border towns.

No sweat, Kim. I've got this thing under control. I'm electing to go with the Gödel–Herbrand–Kleene recursive functions, and refine the results using Böhm-Jacopini canonical structures (which, as we all know, use the logic SEQUENCE, IF-THEN-ELSE, and WHILE-DO, with two more: DO-WHILE and CASE). I'll be running multiple iterations in an effort to achieve the smallest possible "square meters footprint," thereby ensuring the cheapest possible fare for canal entry. Nobody said this would be easy.
