no alarm siren

Recommended Posts

Finally got my alarm reprogrammed with the key fobs. So now the car locks and unlocks with the push of a button.

But dispite all the flashing lights telling me the alarm is going off when the doors are opened after is set itself I have zero sound from the siren.

Any ideas ?

Where is the siren located ?

Thanks

Neil

Actually quite easy. I'd I remember correctly its mounted on the wheel arch next to the fuel tank. I had the same issue with mine at one point and all I can think is that I reset it. Follow the instructions in the owners handbook and you may find it springs back to life.

Trevor

I'll get around to it at some point.

Been fiddling with this today.

No matther how much I try to reprogram it all works ok but no siren.

Taken the siren off the car and it dont look to good.

Am I right by saying this siren is no longer made and a new one wont work with the original alarm?

Thanks guys for your advice

Cobra don't make it anymore but you may find some Lotus dealers may still stock it (£125 ex VAT from one specialist :ouch: )

Lotus were also selling off complete A111M0098F alarm kits for about £145 ex. VAT and you could use the siren from that if they have any left.

Alternatively you could use an aftermarket battery backed siren for less than £20 as I expect the wiring to the siren is pretty simple.

Well after much messing about I gave the car to a well known Lotus specialist.

They sourced a second hand alarm siren.

Im told there is a battery built into the siren and when this packs up it wont work as it should.

Funny isnt it, I drop the car off to have the alarm sorted. Then I instruct them to give it its "A" service as its due to. Get the whole car machine polished, and sort out many other niggles that have been bugging me.

So as you can imagine the bill was a tad larger than I originally had planned.

Still is good to have a car that now locks, unlocks and makes a loud scream when triggered.

should try to test this on my car ?!

..as it's a 1998 -and I've not heared anything since I own it (2002/3)

so now I have it ..no sound (as expected)

but the question is:

..on those later cars with the '98 on interior and the Cobra system with the round fob & intrusion sensing (microwave) in the rear centre console pocket housing -does it normally sound like an steady *buzz* noise ..with open door and activated alarm ?

As he owners manual tells me, that as soon as the alarm is activated -and not all doors/ bonnets are fully closed, the system will notice that and activates an buzzer, to tell me that the *you could call it 'readiness check' or something* was not done sufficiently.

It does this rapid flashing on the LED, but no buzzer beep or something -until the 40 sec arming period is over ..it does now flash the indicators as expected (without siren, as this does not work after all those years.. as usuall on old cars)

Is there any other buzzer in the cockpit, apart from the *lights on* buzzer ??

(this small buzzer for the lights, located under the driver’s side dashboard works, and the intrusion sensing also works via microwave -as an 'light on -doors open' test implies and the indicator flashing with armed alarm and hands in the open roof)

Im told the battery cant be replaced. But if you remove it and by pass it the siren should work. But there will be no back up.

Dont quote me on this though.

strange thing is -if the backup-battery is only meant as "intelligent" 'backup'  there, in case the alarm is in acion, and someone cuts of the main battery

-why do we not have a siren sound with the main battery still in the car ?

..there is no 'beep' (to warn me that the system was activated whilst not all doors are closed to make the self-test  -as it is written in the instructions)

and there is no loud sound if the car is manipulated ..all i can do is force the indicators to flash if I try it with activated sensing on doors/bonnet and cabin-microvave.

It might not be able to be replaced by the people that told you, but if it's got a battery in it, someone that knows what they are doing can replace it.

sounds like some sort of 3v lithium-cell ..soldered directly onto the circuit-board ?!

worth a try I say

Interesting exchange.  I also have a problem with my Cobra system......only I wish it made no sounds.  As soon as I start the car the alarm system emits a loud "chirp"......about every 5 seconds.  IT WILL NOT STOP.  Even when I park the car and shut it down the chirp continues until I arm the system.  MOST ANNOYING.  I guess the only thing I can do is replace the unit....if I can find one on this side of the "pond".

simply contact a dealership, or one of the US-owners with the Tech1 package and the right data cartridge. ..for the fault-code

Would guess it is an *ignition on* 'readyness sound' or something that is required in your area of market (have you read the owners instruction for your car?) , and one of the sensors is not ready, or a tailgate or someting is not fully closed (to the system at least -so one of the switches fouls the system)

..or as you are in the US of A , is there an 'misconception by owner' ?

-simply with the other systems, so what means it actually is not the Cobra system what is on, it is the seatbelts or ligh warning, or whatever your car needs to have legally over there   ..and this makes odd sounds as long as you have the ignition on ?

:no  :no

... :realmad:  :realmad:  :realmad:

..as said some time earlier, there is a hughe misconception, or call it 'constructive fault' within the Esprit !

I know some of you have tried, or done a reseal on the quarter glass section, as for havin rusty tanks or water leaks there  ..but that is not in all situation the reason for water comming into the inner body:

The fault is, as said once by me that the air-intake is not sealed, it is build up from simple sections of thermoplast  and only holds the mesh-grill and the intake tube in place  ..but there can also pass lots of rain between the rough edges over the years.

Now, as the Cobra-system alarm siren is fittet there on RH as well -and as it is (think it will be this way on all Esprit with Cobra system..)  ..it is mounted facing upwarts -there is oxides all over the place, as water and dirt is slowly gone into mine over the last 10 years.

No wounder that the siren does not react on anything ..just take a look into the pictures -horrible I say ..horrible !

..oh, as a note for those owners in the dry states of the US -see there, if the siren is intact (aka not with a rotten mainboard circuit , like mine) ..you can of course fit a new back-up battery into it in  DIY-style . ..it is just a old style NiCd-battery with terminal ports ..a package every model ship racer would know to recreate.
