It does look very similar but I didn't buy new, except for the rubber seals and the outer chrome rings.

As I haven't got the car back yet from the paint shop I wouldn't like to say anymore until it's all back and working!

Cheers Chris,

I'll probably just try and remove the inner rings, and try fitting the kit I have. If I have no luck I'll do some research and see what replacements I can find.

Try typing this into ebay and see if this is what you need.

Here are mine after removal:

In order to restore these, I need to replace or refurbish the following:

Outer chrome surround:

This is easily done, as they are readily available from Rimmer Bros:

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-511598AK

The pics on their website appear identical to the part I pulled off my car:

Then we have the inner ring:

IMG_2028_zps68ugdrxt.jpg

These are in pretty good condition so I'll get them plated and they should come up nice.

Next up, we have the outer ring:

IMG_2027_zpsaqaxa9je.jpg

These are going to be a problem because the thread the adjusting bolts screw into are made out of plastic and riveted in. Don't think I can plate over plastic?

Here they are, little buggers:

IMG_2031_zpsodryrfe3.jpg

IMG_2030_zpsc3itwli1.jpg

Then we have the adjusting screws. They have various washers and rubbers built in that separate the three rings. I haven't been able to find replacements.

IMG_2029_zpsetu3fgl2.jpg

Finally, there are the lamps themselves. Mine say 2C1X on the front and Made in China on the back:

IMG_2012_zpswgsfrf1p.jpg

Not sure if these are any good or not. What would be the best quality headlamps for an S2? I'm not sure which ones to get from Rimmer Bros:

My headlamp pods were in similar condition. I cleaned, resprayed and replaced with parts from rimmer Bros. Here's the result before and after.post-17315-0-67941600-1426522235.jpgpost-17315-0-07469700-1426522271.jpg

What is that big bowling ball on the back? I don't have that on mine. And which headlamps did you get from Rimmer Bros?

Bought the four chrome rims from Rimmer Bros, and the headlamp screw. Had two of these and two like yours. These were the main beam ones I think. It's a long time since I rebuilt them. Also bout new looms and plugs. The rest I stripped and resprayed. The lamps are original I cleaned them up. Didn't want halogen as I wanted to keep as original as possible.

Have disassembled everything, but been left with these two stupid stupid rings which won't come apart. This one bolt is rust-welded on, won't budge and has actually broken the rivet that holds the thread so it just spins round and round. Haven't been able to find new or old stock for these two ring parts anywhere, so stuck for the moment....

So... you don't want to be able to see the road at night then!

Those sealed beam units were like having a glow worm in each headlamp pod ;)

The rings don't come apart. Powder coat or respray as they are.

Paul, don't plan on driving at night or in wet.

Yeah they do, I got the other ones apart and in three pieces, then broke the threaded piece that last damn screw goes into. Also annoying that the last ring has plastic bits riveted on, so I'll have to remove these for plating.

In the too hard basket for now.

So did mine! If you look at the pics I posted above you can see the three rings separated. Just that last screw that was rusted in broke the last one.

For £160 on ebay and no doubt elsewhere you can replace everything, bowls, chrome and new lights thus enabling you to bin the whole lot that is driving you up the wall.......

Which is what I'd love to do! Let's say I get these lights and chrome surrounds:

What rings or backing plates do I buy to screw them into and that will fit my S2 headlamp pods?

My rings had a permanent rivet on one side that could only be removed by drilling. So left as is and resprayed after treating.

Do Rimmer Bros sell the headlight bowls too? if so they should all fit together. I bought the whole set off ebay as I mentioned earlier and they came with bulbs, glass headlights, chrome trims and bowls. There are many other cars out there that use 5 3/4" headlights. RS2000 escorts, capris , triumph 2000 etc etc so whole kits arent in short supply.  I had to trim the rear of the bowl to get it past the headlamp pod bolts inside but otherwise it was a straight forward replacement.

Here I am again, tackling this problem I abandoned a couple of years ago! My three-part assemblies have come apart nicely and been replated, except for this one stubborn bolt above that wouldn't come out. In the end I had to drill and hack it out because it was so badly rusted on.

So I need to replace that nutsert/rivnut cylindrical thingo that the bolt screws into. You can see it in the first pic, and in the second you can see the rusted bolt that screws into it. In the first pic you can also see it's fitted onto the ring in a rivet-like fashion.

My question is, what the blazes is this little thing, and where can I get a new one?

My new strategy with this restoration is to salvage old original parts as much as possible, I can't tell you the number of new parts I've bought that differ to the originals and do not fit!

Yep much better to use original parts, they fit properly are usuallly better quality and it's cheaper! The frame pivots on those bits to adjust the headlight. I don't think you can buy that bit. Maybe just some rubber tubing  and a bolt with nylon nut would work?  Just has to allow the two parts to pivot slightly?

I have to do the Turbo pods soon, luckily they are in fab condition!

They were used on various Triumphs. I bought a secondhand set from  a Triumph 2000 I think it was.

I haven't been able to find the exact same one as used on my Esprit. Guess I'll have to keep checking eBay until one comes up.

I think the part in question is the mounting plate that actually screws into the headlamp pod.
