vintaylor
Hi guys, I've had the front of my car repaired, whilst doing so the fibreglass specialist filled the bracket holes on both the front of the car and both headlamps. So I have no clue where I should drill the new holes. Would anyone have measurements where the bracket holes should be? I'm missing the holes where the bonnet hinge bracket mounts to the body and the holes on either side of the headlamp pod. I'm also having problems bolts the telescopic bonnet stay to the bonnet. There are two holes on the bonnet where the bonnet stay should be bolted. However only one bolt holes is threaded. During transport the bonnet flew open on the motorway and got damaged. I had the bonnet repaired but there is no thread within one of the two mounting holes. Any ideas how I could fix this? Cheers Guys Quote Vin Taylor
slewthy
As with my reply to one of your other threads, I have used tons of stuff from Memfast and I'm sure there are pleny of other similar companies around and in Malta. They illustrate several solutions for fitting screws into blind holes etc, from the ubiquitous rivnut we all hate to rubnuts etc. Either rubnuts or probably these http://www.memfast.co.uk/shop/Vprod2.asp?cat=2257001824 might work for your bonnet stay. vintaylor
Hi Simon, One of my headlamps has the old pivot bush hole still marked so I'm thinking i'll probably copy the same distance on the other headlamp pod. Are the pivot bushes supposed to be mounted the same as in the pic? .. Tried looking at the parts manual and it isn't very helpful in determining if the pivot bush should be mounted for the outside or inside of the headlamp. Would you know of anyone that might know the hole dimensions where the bonnet hinges are mounted to the body? The same hole is used to attach the headlamp to the body. Also the manual mentions a spacer that is attached to the pivot pin.. Not sure if mine had one or not :S Quote Vin Taylor
Paul Coleman
Vin To locate the original holes - have you tried shining a light behind the pod when it's dark? If they've been filled with filler they will show up under a bright light. This is how I found my original holes to go back to one motor rather than two. Paul. Hi Paul, I think I should be ok locating the headlamp holes on the headlamp pods. Would you have an idea what I could do to mark up the Bonnet hinge holes on the body? vintaylor
Update: Got hold of some rubnuts and managed to fix the hole used to attach the telescope bonnet stay , so that's sorted I've tried Paul's suggestion at shining a light from the back to show the old headlamp bracket holes. The problem is that I am only getting a rough idea where the hole is. Does anyone know of another member that might be able to measure up the holes for me? I don't want to go ahead and drill holes in the body without being 100% sure. Here is a faint picture of what the light being the headlamp housing shows .. and another pic showing where I think the headlamp pivot bush should be .. but again I cannot be 100% sure as the holes aren't clearly defined. If I mark up the hole slightly off then I'd have no way of adjusting the headlamp fitting Quote Vin Taylor
Freemason
Check out my bonnet hinge, it has a curve and is different to yours and the replacement I bought from SJS, which both have straight angles. Has anyone seen this 'curved' bonnet hinge before? Is it factory or yet another thing the PO modified on my car?

Freemason
Does part 8, the bush, go inside the part 7, the bearing housing? I'd have to press it in?
vintaylor
Hi Antonio, I haven't mounted mine back in, but I believe part 8 is a bush spacer to make up for the gap before the R Clip at the end of the pin and not mounted in the bearing. Freemason
Thanks Vin, makes sens now! Does anyone have any pics on which way the pod bearing housings go in, and which way the hinge pin goes? One end of the hinge pin has the holes closer to the end. I wanteed to upload pics of what I have but there's a bug on this site at the moment and it's not accpting Photobucket pics.

Freemason
And the forum resizes large images into tiny files, so if you need to see any detail they're useless.
Bibs
The max displayed dimension is 1200px, hardly tiny. Freemason
I've been through this on another thread. It is not supposed to resize but check all the pics I have uploaded, they are originally huge files and they get resized to tiny files with no resolution for some reason. Could be another bug, but that was the reason I started using Photobucket. Now that doesn't work either...
vintaylor
Antonio, Hinge pics have a hole either end for an R clip to fit in. Quote Vin Taylor
Freemason
Hey Vin, Yes but the hole at one end is closer to the end, the other end has it further away. Hard to explain without posting up pics (very frustrated the site won't let me upload pics anymore!). Also, I read somewhere one side has a split pin, the other has an R clip. Also looking for some guidance on which way the bearing housings go in. I got some from RDENT, which thankfully are labelled L and R, but I'm not sure which way they go, because one side has the housing sticking out more. Again, hard to explain without pics... The PO messed with all this and put his own custom bonnet hinges in, so am looking to refit the stock S2 set-up.
Freemason
Here are a couple of pics of how I've installed the bearing housings on both sides. Do I have them right way round? vintaylor
Hi Antonio, I've look at my bushes multiple times, and cannot seem to work out whats different about them. Quote Vin Taylor
Freemason
If you look closely at my pics, you'll see the tube inside is angled, so one section prodrudes and the other is flush with the plate. This is presumably to allow for the angle of the body panels. My originals were also like this. What's got me confused is which way they go, both on the body and headlamp pod. Not sure if the S1 had a different arrangement that found it's way into some S2s?
Freemason
Here's a better pic. You can see clearly how the tube is fixed at an angle. My question is: which way does the protruding end go, both on the body and the headlamp pod? Hard to tell from the pics on SJ site whether his are angled as well or not: From the description though: BUSH HOUSING for HEADLAMP POD PIVOT (On L/H pod/R/H on body) A079U4451F EACH 26.00 Looks like you are supposed to reverse them. Nelly
HI Antonio, As you will have seen on another thread I had a similar problem when putting my car back together - I didn't take it apart so didn't have the benefit of seeing how it was before. Other difference between your situation to mine was that my headlight pods didn't have the brackets removed from them so I only had the brackets in the body to worry about. From memory....as you will have seen the bracket is angled internally - this was obvious when I did a dry fit as the bonnet bracket was so crooked that there was no way it could be right. See the photo below.... You can see at this stage the bracket is held in place by tape. Once I swapped it round and rivited it in place, it was fine. You can obviously use the metal pin to guage if the angle is right or not, and when it is it should look more like this... It may look a bit crooked still but was fine once secured. I would imagine then its a case of doing the same with your headlight pod and checking its alignment, again I would think it should be obvious when it is right or not. Hope that helps but let me know if you are still struggling. Neil
Freemason
Thanks Neil for your reply. Here are some pics from Peter: Peter's car has a metal plate on the body side. I've seen this on a few other cars, but mine is different, it has the pod housings also on the body. I find that no matter which way I put the housings in, the rod never seems to sit quite straight, and it doesn't help that it fits in there loosely. Roland reports that his SJ housings are completely flat, no offset. As often happens with this car, think I'm just gonna have to improvise...
