FUK! the new water pump leaks! It seems that either it was never good, or standing at the same spot under timing belt tension for 5 1/2 years did it in... I could´ve figured this out while waiting for the tanks to be built, but as an idiot I wasted that opportunity. The chanches for driving the car this year are getting worse and worse...

On a positive note, fuel leaks are history (althought we´ll see about the carbs later..).

Jani,

There’s nothing remotely like a sensor in that position on my 912 engine, looks like its mounted into the  carb cooling manifold to the block?  but my temp sensor wire is blue....

Might be worth finding out if lotus sited it on the manifold for early engines, then moved it to the stat housing. Maybe you have a later stat housing for some reason?

Good luck

I think you are on to something there, Dave. It looks like my Excel 2,2 HC engine has an older intake and later water pump! So now I have two temp sensors... 🙂

Parts manual for the 2,2 Esprit shows the temp sensor on the intake. I imagine they moved later to the water pump/thermostat housing.

I think that inlet manifold is the version with the air vacuum solenoids, so it controls carbs fuelling and spark timing differently depending on the temperature of the engine. The coolant temp sender unit remained constant position (although IIRC spec changed when dial changed voltage range).

Hmm... The wire from the inlet sensor goes to the firewall and to the cockpit. Well, first things first. We bled the brakes, fixed the drivers side window that had jumped from the rails.

No first start, as the fuel pump had expired. Changed it to a facet fuel pump from my Alfa project.

Fuk... My never used alternator seized as I was planning to drive the car up from it´s garage. I bought it five years ago from SJ´s. My car has an Excel HC 912 engine. What do you guys recommend for the replacement?

If its any help I took mine apart and replaced the bearings when they started squealing like a pig.

This one is seized solid. If the replcement is only 60 eur, I'll go for that.

New alternator fitted. Part cost, 58 eur. While I am happy to support the Lotus specialists who do immensively important job in remanufacturing new parts and providing for us to keep our cars on the road, I have to say that 58 eur for a very common (if you know what it is) part vs. 200 pounds + VAT + shipping (takes a week) for the same part from a specialist makes me think...

I truly don´t mind paying more for the knowledge and the parts availability, but in this case I have to say I feel a bit taken for a ride. And not in a good way... 🙂

Hi Jani, what caused the seizure? I just wondered as I bought a reconditioned alternator that appeared to seize up all by itself. On dismantling I found that too much resin had been used on the internal windings during it's rebuild and this had worked it's way between all the moving parts eventually jamming everything up solid. I managed to file and scrape off the excess and reassembled it and then it was fine.

Intresting... Haven´t had yet a chance (or motivation) to do an autopsy to the alternator. Hearing about your experience raises my curiosity about the reason for the seizure in mine. Will have to look at it when I have the time. Now all my efforts are in getting the car road worthy and registered as a LHD car here in Finland. I am racing against time, as the first snow is approaching. Although, I might get some studded winter tires for drifting on the ice.. 🙂

Shifter adjusted and now I have all the gears. Indicators are perplexing. Indicator light at the dash is on when the ignition is on, but the indicators themselves do not work at all. Hazards kind of work... When I switch the hazards on, the indicator light at the dash goes off and the indicators flash very rapidly all around the car.

Have a look on my blog. i explain in detail how the gear change works.

Thank you. Saw some of you photos earlier and figured it out via the workshop manual.

Sounds like a bad earth, checking all of them is where I'd start. 😀
