Turbo help

Hi guys I'm pretty sure my turbos are shafted I'm trying to source some replacement s from Owen developments but they need a part number or type I know there t25 / 60 but is there any more info so I can get these either rebuilt or replaced for better/ newer possibly hybrid I see people talk about t28 s as a more powerful replacement any help appreciated

I was told just last week that they can be sent away and reconditioned for about £550 each at least that was what one of the specialists who advertise on here reckons.

I was speaking to the guy at South West Lotus Centre as at the time I thought my seals had gone and he told mee they just send them away for re-conditioning as you can't get the seals any more. Best double check as I've had a very large number of figures going through my head over the last few days and the brain cell is cooked.

ramspott & brand sells some hybrid versions, and think you can get stock ones in UK as 'reconditioned' in exchange

A little over £1000 for the two sounds good, I'm not aware of the bearing upgrade could you enlighten me. Was there any improvement in the cars performance that you noticed

traditional bearing for the main shaft work like the 'floater' principles ...of an high reving part/axle shaft forming an pressurised area around it in a bearing with defined gap for the oil to build up a type of cussion (same as for any ordinary bearing in the engine , as for example crankshaft, rod an cam ..just with the difference that for those you need a oil-pump to create at least a sufficient amount of oil pressurised between both parts ..as the rpm are not so high that the viscosity of the floating oil would help there to separate the rotating part from its bearing surface.

'ball bearings' on the other hand would carry the load within steady small contact areas, even without high amounts of oil pressurised between both surfaces ..and those modern 'ball bearing' types for the main shaft on a turbo even have ceramic balls in some cases, so the heat (and wear) resistance is even higher (you may have heared in the past century that you always should wait until the oil is heated up and cooled down to the right levels if you want power outputs from a turbo, or if you want to last this application very long if you stop the engine..

Nothing you'd notice in terms of performance but it's means more oil around the compressor shaft as there are more holes in a 360 to let oil in and 'all around' lubrication. Conventional bearings are 270 degrees are aren't as good as the 360.

Yup, definitely.

If you want a performance upgrade, ceramic bearings are the way to go as they spool quicker (since they are less likely to deform) which means less lag but in truth the V8 doesn't really suffer from lag.

We found out today that one of the turbos has a slight oil weep so its a case of taking them off and off to Turbo Technics for a refurb. Anyone know if the turbos come out with the engine in place?

The turbo's are incredibly close to the chassis so the engine has to come off it's mounts and be lifted to get clearance to remove the turbo's I'm sure.

Long story, the car went in to have the manifold studs done on the left bank and it would appear that for some reason a stud on the right hand side had been overtightened or not checked while the engine was out, coupled with the oil being a good litre over what should have been put in to the engine a problem reared its head. We sorted the oil and the stud has been fixed now, needless to say I will not be using that particular 'specialist' again. The guys who used to prepare my road/track RX7 in Portsmouth are now going to do everything on the car as I know they are good at what they do and there are always a vast aray of high performance cars they sort although specialists in rotary engines it would appear they are more capable than most at looking after an Esprit V8

So was the oil actually leaking from behind the stud??

As far as we can tell the larger ARP stud may have breached the oilway because there is evidence of the oil on the thread but nothing obvious to the eye but it does 'feel' when fully tightened that it could just go and the thread be ruined. So far the repair done previously is standing up, but this probably wasn't helped by being overfilled with oil initially.
