Jonathan
It definatly would have been a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (C3, pref 1977) or a late RX-7. I was looking for one at the same time as the Esprit, the Esprit came up 1st - Once it got me into driving Lotus's, I doubt I'll ever not own one. nicksoldies
Europa John Player Special. Loose Cannon
Europa John Player Special. If they hadn't replaced it with the Esprit, I was thinking the same thing, used to love them as a short trousered twerp, but they look a bit old now. If sticking with Lotus probably an Elite. Trouble is the Esprit has been in my head for 4/5ths of my lifetime so its difficult to imagine wanting anything else. Maybe a American ponycar like the 69 Mustang or the 71 Firebird. Evil_Dr_Fish
My choices have pretty much been mentioned here already by others.... A great big wheel arched, 70's Stingray vette... *Possibly in a wost case scenario an S2000 or RX8? but more than likely... either a 348 or an Elise Or... it's entirely possible I wouldn't be driving anything nice at all... Were it not for the ('cheap') Esprit I probably wouldn't have bought a supercar at all nor even thought it possible and would not have developed my wider interest in cars a a whole - So if I had got the speed-lust, I'd probably be back on a bike! Tony K
Most of us are lucky enough to be driving the car of our choice. If the Esprit hadn't been invented (heaven forbid) For the SAME MONEY you spent, what would you be driving? Yes, it *is* the car of my choice -- has been my favorite car in the world for as long as I can remember. Same money? It just happens to be luck the the Esprit is more affordable. Today, if the Esprit had not been invented, I would have coughed up the cash for: or maybe Back at the time I bought the red car (1999), I was seriously considering a Merak and somewhat considering a 308. Another car I was seriously considering was: There was one for sale in the States back then (they are very rare here). I'm glad I didn't buy it -- I wouldn't get one today. I had set out to buy an Esprit, was tempted by other mid-engine cars that I always liked, but in the end, decided on what I originally wanted. If Esprits didn't exist today, it would be a tossup between the 308 and Merak. The Merak is lower-maintenance and more comfortable, but parts are more expensive. The 308 is more maintenance and probably better performance, but more expensive as a whole. The S1 can outhandle both easily (I have verified this myself), but needs a little help in the power (I'm working on it). Both of the Italians are better quality than the S1, but the parts prices and overall purchase price more than offset that. Toss in the lack of rust issues in the S1 and the sharpest interior ever put into a car, and the S1 comes out the clear winner. I need to get a life and stop typing on the internet so much!
