Gearbox refitting

Recommended Posts

Guys n gals,

Am at the stage of refitting my gearbox (Renault trans) to my newly rebuilt motor and have spent several hours today fighting it without success. The problem seems to be the inability to locate the driven shaft into the spigot bearing.

The splined element appears to engage but then *clunk*, it stops.

I'm certain this shouldn't be a tricky procedure - any thoughts as to what I may be doing wrong?

Clean, grease, then use two punches to rotate the drive shafts to get the splines to move. Must be in 5th gear I think. IIRC.

Use the two bolts that go through the dowells to cinch up the tranny, then fix the rest. Use some of the longer bolts in the dowel holes at first then switch to the proper bolts.

Did you align the clutch driven plate and the spigot bearing when you tightened the clutch cover? Did you check the friction plate fits on the 1st motion shaft before fitting the clutch? It is unlikely to go in unless you align things. Forcing it with long bolts could well cause damage. You should be able to push the box home without any other force if it's all lined up OK. Try turning the flywheel as you push the box to line up the 1st motion shaft and clutch friction plate splines. If it still won't go in, re align the clutch and try again.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I didn't do the alignment myself (not brave enough to rebuild an engine so it was done professionally) and I'm assured it was aligned using the special Lotus tool when it was reassembled.

Abandoned it for the weekend so will have another crack soon. My real concern was how tight the spigot bearing is - I'd imagined not overly tight.
