ChrisJ
Following on from Spitfires, now for the Mosquito. I thought that the suspension design on the undercarriage is interesting - solid rubber.

Ever since I was a child watching the Battle of Britain film, then joining the Air Cadets with a special pass 6 months early, I have been in awe of Spitfires. A good friend of mine owned one, then sold it to make way for a full "plan to reality" build of a Mosquito with not one, but TWO of those bloody hair raising Rolls Royce Merlin engines. I was on a training course about 15 years ago now back at Greenlands (the home of the founder of WH Smith near Henley on Thames). It was a typically glorious summers day. Blue sky. Not a cloud to disturb it and we were all sat outside working on a presentation. Then in the distance I heard that distinctive sound of the Merlin. I dropped everything and ran into the centre of the lawn looking up and running parallel with the Thames at a few thousand feet came the Spitfire. It spent about 30 minutes doing acrobatics above the house and Henley (I presume practice for an airshow) before roaring and accelerating back over my head from whence I came. To say I was a like a wee boy in the sweetie shop with 50p ( a fortune in my day when beer was around 65p a pint ) is an understatement. If I ever I win a substantial sum on the lottery my first purchase will not be a car. I could spend £2m on an Evija, but I would spend £2m on a 2 seat Spitfire and then learn how to fly her without even missing a heart beat or even a second thought! 3 Spitfires in a row. In modern photo. My god I am, in heaven! Thank you for posting @Chillidoggy. you have made my Saturday night! 2 Quote I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. LotusLeftLotusRight
C8RKH. I also remember seeing a Spitfire fly over Henley on Thames one day many years ago. We were sitting outside a traditional pub enjoying a pint or three of Brakspear bitter. I actually see a two seat Spitfire fly over quite often during the summer. They do pleasure flights at our local airfield for about £3000 per half hour. If you do buy one and learn to fly it, you can recoup some of your maintenance costs by taking out paying customers. Bibs
A couple of years ago when we filmed Dame Vera Lynn's 100th birthday we also had to film the White Cliffs from a Spitfire. When we arrived I asked if I could have a closer look and they invited me to take a seat... Felt very solemn sitting where someone once sat no doubt no long ago a teenager about to take off, unaware if they'd still be alive in a few hours. 1 Quote 88 Esprit NA, 89 Esprit Turbo SE, Evora, Evora S, Evora IPS, Evora S IPS, Evora S IPS SR, Evora 400, Elise S1, Elise S1 111s, Evora GT410 Sport Evora NA For forum issues, please contact the Moderators. ChrisJ
An old one this time. Love the howl and the way the camera pans to where the B52 took off, and then the Vulcan appears top right
Gold FFM C8RKH Posted October 5, 2020 Gold FFM Report Share Posted October 5, 2020 The B52 is all big, fat, laggy and saggy and then the Vulcan just absolutely wipes the floor with its power and grace! Gold FFM Barrykearley Posted October 5, 2020 Gold FFM Report Share Posted October 5, 2020 They have a B52 at Duxford - and a lot of other planes around it. The B52 is absolutely massive, huge - a full on behemoth. Quote Only here once
LotusLeftLotusRight
As some of you probably know, there was a detachment of 6 B52s at Fairford for a month until late September. I live 100 miles away, but they flew over at 10,000ft most days, heading to and from Eastern Europe. People are amazed to think that these planes are nigh on 60 years old, but then so are many of the USAF KC135 tanker aircraft that operate all over the world on a daily basis. Here’s one of the B52s passing overhead recently.
