Latest magnificent machine, not flown it yet, will wait for ideal conditions for the first one.

Just back from a two day trip. Gatwick-Catania-Gatwick-Madrid-Gatwick-Milan Malpensa-Gatwick. Saw the international Space station last night... You can even see the curvature of Earth from 38

I've just boarded an a 320.

Why is there someone beating shit out of the fuselage underneath me?

I suspect that will be the baggage handlers carefully stacking the luggage... "Handle with Care"

Fairly common to hear all manner of banging, squeaking and other noises coming from under the floor on a 320. There is a hydraulic pressure balancer under there called the PTU that is cycling to pressure both hydraulic circuits. My PA said it sounded as though someone was trying to twist the wings off!

That is a great analogy!  Your PA has a way with words as sounds just like that.    :unworthy:

I have heard it a lot on Airbuses I'd noticed and often wondered what it was, I had figured out that it was a hydraulic circuit  but wonder what it is connected to?  Happens either just on push back time or coming to the gate.  Like a squeaking back and forth of something getting wrenched off.  You can tell the regulars from the less frequent flyers who always look worried as hell when it starts.  TBH it really doesn't sound good and as not all aircraft seem to do it can be understandably concerning.

As I understand it, there are two separate hydraulic circuits and the PTU acts like a pressure balancer. If the pressure in once circuit drops too low it cuts in, often around start-up and taxi.

(Although after the recent take-off with a baggage handler asleep in the hold auRouge's reply should not be discounted   )

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!! Noise when the engines are switched off is more likely people but a noise that kind of sounds like a dog barking repeatedly is the PTU. Activated by an electric pump that pushes the PTU to open and close cargo doors on the ground.

Your Intel is correct, the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) is used to power the opposite Hydraulic system automatically in the event of the system sensing a pressure drop.

It can and is also activated during high system demands (ie after take off by the gear going up and the flaps/slats being retracted and all the flying controls working hard...

Nothing to worry about. You'll also hear it when pilots taxi in or out on a single engine. So both hydraulic systems are powered by one engine driven pump via the PTU.

We call it the "Dog" as it sounds like "rrawww rrawww rrawww" as it's working!

You haven't bumped into a young lady called Paula Fisher in the cabin in the new job have you Brij? I'm sure it's a big company but thought I'd ask, we used to work together many years ago in casinos and now she's a 'cabin executive' or whatever their PC name is nowadays for your firm.

Nothing to worry about I promise!

Essentially a back up pump that ensures both main hydraulic systems have enough power at all times.

You only hear it when we are operating things under high load or under single engine operations...

 I now have a whole new bit of chat to tell fellow pax then!  It will be the single engine phase when i usually hear it.  Makes sense from all the hydraulics noises we have on ships.

This forum is a brilliant resource!  I now have had everything from Bees advice to plane hydraulics  :unworthy:

Not yet mate, but I'm sure I will at some stage. With regard to the cabin crew member in charge... The official name seems to change every 5 mins in the industry but I like to call them "Number 1"... If it's good enough for Picard it's good enough for me!! (Officially I call them Cabin Manager, but it breaks the ice and they know I'm from one of the older airlines and won't bite or make their lives difficult )

Just back from a two day trip.

Gatwick-Catania-Gatwick-Madrid-Gatwick-Milan Malpensa-Gatwick.

Saw the international Space station last night... You can even see the curvature of Earth from 38,000ft on a clear night... Unfortunately iPhone couldn't capture it but here's a decent shot of Paris from two nights ago on the way back from Antalya and Mt Etna after take off from Catania yesterday. Awesome weather apart from the thunderstorms last night in Madrid.. Tricky!

Hell of a bank in that last photo. Bet the passengers weren't happy! :P

Anyone for 6 days airborne, strapped into your seat, no realistic diversions....relying on solar power charging  lithium batteries to keep the thing flying through the night? Even if 100% charged as the sun goes down, in the morning no more than 10% charge left.
