Latest magnificent machine, not flown it yet, will wait for ideal conditions for the first one.

Just back from a two day trip. Gatwick-Catania-Gatwick-Madrid-Gatwick-Milan Malpensa-Gatwick. Saw the international Space station last night... You can even see the curvature of Earth from 38

I'm sure there's lots of security in place but I'm not sure a £400 iPad landing a plane is such a good idea!

All those pretty pictures......(!) I come from the days of round dials and a brain between the ears....the batteries don't go flat on them.

I found this on Pprune. Seeing as it's Christmas, and we all need to feel good sometimes, I'm copying it here.....

"Many millions of years ago I was in and out of a country airstrip in a C402 in Victoria Australia doing a temporary to-and-fro charter gig out of Bankstown Sydney.

One Saturday I noticed 4 young bordering-teenage kids at the airstrip fence, treadlies parked. Three were grouped together while a dopey-looking skinny one was a few feet away from them.

I had an hour to kill so I walked over and invited them to come aboard and have a lookover. I was once a kid at the airport fence myself (still am at heart) so I empathised. The group of three immediately sprang up and told the fourth to stay where he was and guard the bikes. I interrupted and asked why (the bikes were safe) and they replied "because he's a real d!ckhead and a total suck mate."

Aussies go for the underdog so I told the three to stay put and invited the nerd to come with me. The skinny little freckly runt took like a duck to water. He (like me) came from a poor family and was lucky to even own a bicycle. "I'm touching a real aeroplane!" he kept saying and couldn't wipe this huge grin on his face. I knew then and there he was gonna be an aviator one day. We had a great time and taught him the flight controls and basic instruments. I wish I could've taken him up for a circuit and let him have a fly.

Anyway the hour went very fast - but he told me his name and I vice versa. The other 3 seriously jeered and belittled him and called him a little suck for going aboard an aeroplane when they were "cooler and will be real pilots one day". I never went back to the strip, forgot the event and got on with my life.

In 2007 enroute to Dubai I got this written note from the purser from a passenger in Business. I knew the name but couldn't place it. Being post-911 he couldn't come up the sharp end and Co regs said I wasn't permitted to go back and mingle. So I told the purser I'll see him on arrival.

Yes indeedy you can guess it...the 'little freckly runt' had become a senior 777 skipper with a major Gulf airline. Later we had a huge number of beers and he told me he'd never forgotten that day and was on Cloud Nine for a month.

I didn't pay for one drink! smile.gif"

I must confess, living right next to Gatwick today, it was nice to have some peace and quiet! I've not had that since the icelandic ash cloud. At which point, buzzed the Gatwick runway in a C172 :D I need to move away from airport CTAs :)

They closed the M23 as a Virgin Atlantic plane came in for an emergency landing. One of its sets of wheels was locked up.

Signed that petition already.... I remember wandering into that Chapel whilst going through the OASC at Biggin in 1970!! These days, the Hurricane and Spitfire outside are glass fibre replicas....

The Mighty Shackleton!! The last ones were named after Magic Roundabout characters...they were used as airborne radar stations. I recall the motto was "Old age and treachery shall triumph over Youth and Skill".... even had their own song. The tune is "Bless 'em All"...

Shackletons don't worry me
Shackletons don't bother me
With four Griffon engines and flaps on their wings
Bless all their pistons and their piston rings
'though the bomb load they carry is small
Three fifths of five eighths of f**k all
You'll get no enjoyment from coastal deployment
So cheer up my lads bless 'em all.

Now they say that the Shack is a very fine kite
Of that there is no doubt
If you're in Korea with a MiG up your rear
Then this is the way to get out
Just be calm, be sedate
Don't let your British blood boil
Just sit up quite straight
Throttle back through the gate
And smother the b**tards in oil.....(!)

A Gentleman's memories (caution, aviation content!)

Excuse the ramblings of an old gentleman who has long since penned his last entry in the log book, but does anybody here remember the old days when pilots back then were men that didn't want to be women or girlymen. Pilots all knew who Jimmy Doolittle was. Pilots drank coffee, whiskey, smoked cigars and didn't wear digital watches.

They carried their own suitcases and brain bags like the real men they were. Pilots didn't bend over into the crash position multiple times each day in front of passengers at security so that some Government agent could probe for tweezers or fingernail clippers or too much toothpaste.

Pilots didn't go through the terminal impersonating a caddy pulling a bunch of golf clubs, computers, guitars and feed bags of tofu and granola on a sissy trailer with no hat, and granny glasses hanging on a pink string around their pencil neck ,while talking to their personal trainer on the mobile.

Remember the days when being a Captain was as good as being the King in a Mel Brooks movie. All the stewardesses (aka flight attendants) were young, attractive, and single women that were proud to be combatants in the sexual revolution. They would blush and say thankyou when they were told they looked good, instead of filing a sexual harrassment claim. Junior stewardesses shared a room and talked about men...... with no thoughts of substitutions.

Passengers wore nice clothes and were polite, they could speak AND understand English. They didn't speak gibberish or listen to loud gangster rap on their Ipods. They bathed and didn't smell like a rotting pile of garbage in a jogging suit and flip-flops.

If the Captain wanted to throw some offensive, ranting jerk off the plane, it was done without any worries of a law suit or getting fired.

Axial flow engines crackled with the sound of freedom and left an impressive black smoke trail like a locomotive burning soft coal. Jet fuel was cheap and once the throttles were pushed up they were left there, after all it was the jet age and the idea was to go fast. Economy cruise was something in the performance book, but no one knew why or where it was. When the clacker went off no one got all tight or scared because Boeing built its 707s out of iron, nothing was going to fall off, and that sound then had the same effect on real pilots then as Viagra does now for these new age guys.

There was very little plastic and no composites on the aeroplanes. Planes and women had eye pleasing symetrical curves, not an ugly bunch of vortex generators, ventral fins, flow diverters, tatoos, rings in their noses tongues and eyebrows.

Airlines were run by men who had built their Companies from scratch, knew many of their employees by name and were lifetime airline employees themselves......not pseudo financiers and bean counters who flit from one occupation to another for a few bucks, a better parachute or a fancier title while fervently believing they are a class of beings unto themselves.

Does anybody remember those good old days?
