Don't mess with the Scameras!

Thou shalt not speed!!!

For those on foreign shores, the yellow camera is a Gatso which records your speed (if you're speeding) after you've passed it. The grey camera is a Truvelo, which gets you as you head towards it so basically if you speed here, 2 devices will catch you, nice!

What they are doing in the UK is replacing Gatso cameras with Truvelo ones. This means that as people see the camera they slow down presuming it's the widely known and understood Gatso so when they drive past it they are within the limit. With a Truvelo camera, you've already been caught by the time you pass it!

You can just make out the induction loops in the road just before the truvelo, these are what trigger the camera and not radar or laser.

I think the front facing cameras also help to identify the driver and so get less " it wasnt me driving the car, honest" attempts to get off getting points and a fine.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

I thought Truvelo used some fancy IR nonsense?

IR pictures so they don't need a flash and can get you at night. They use either radar or induction loops to activate them.

AND! As Bibs saw yesterday we have obvious flaunting of "clearly marked camera vans" here as the one that patrols the main A11 is yellow with yellow lights on it and writing saying "safety camera" that you can't read till your next to it. It has the ability to take piccies from both sides, rear and front.

Be very careful when coming to the factory do!

I hate them me :)

Increasingly Road Angels or PDA's are a must then really arent they :D

The rules stating the cameras must be clearly marked / yellow / not concealed were overturned - You can all write and thank Gwyneth Dunwoody MP for that - She's the Chair of the Transport Select Committee...... and DOESN'T DRIVE :) It won't be long before they're concelaeing them in wheelie bins like they do in Aus and Holland - How on earth does anyone GET anywhere over there?! :D Plus of course the satellite tracked road pricing they will force through in the next 10 years... with instant speeding fines incorporated.

Start your engines - point them at our borders... and prepare your exit 'cos I'm off!

The stellite road pricing surely can't go through??? I know every member of the motor trade will be up in arms with it as the industry mags are already getting everyone organised to try and stop it. The figures being bandied around will increase ANY road useage by a huge amount even if they half what they're quoting!

One industry guy from Manchester has to do a 200 mile journey every day. He has his company car but the 100 miles to work and back are "private" mileage so he will have to pay them. The train doesn't go within 30 miles of his destination and he has to travel there virtually every day. He quotes that there will be an increase in personal cost to him of

They are currently undergoing trials and iirc they are talking for 2010 as 'report due' date.

I think it's the worst of the intrusive measures they have considered / introduced to date (Rip Bill... ID Cards... DNA Databse...)

It is still a proposal / in cosultation etc etc but they definitely have a hard on for it. I have seen, read and heard many references to it buy many other MPs AND Lords and all of them seem more keen in its ability to automate speeding offences than reducing road use!

I used their rough figures and ONE journey at the wrong time of the day on the M25 could cost you more than an ENTIRE YEAR'S road tax! :D

IN THEORY they would scrap Road Tax and reduce Petrol Duty. While they may well scrap the road tax, fuel duty will still be there and will rapidly creep back up without question.

The fff-ing tree hugging hippies have hi-jacked this whole issue long enough imo, with their anti-car agenda and psuedo research & pop-science and the fff-ers have to be stopped! :)

TBH unless you're asleep you shouldn't miss a brighly painted box on the side of the road (and yes i thought they all had to be clearly visible) and if you're still worried buy a tomtom go and slap all the positions into that and get yourself a free satnav (still the best imo) and scamera detector with it.

I must admit my botty did flutter the other day as I was doing 90mph (apparently) in my Escort van diesel (rofl) down the A249 and there was some sneaky bit of filth in the trees in a dug out layby with the mobile van...didn't bother braking as it would have cuased an accident to the plick driving right up my back end (I was over taking like) but looks as if I got away with it (nudge nudge, howsyerfarver).

It's those and the bloody motorway ones I can't stand, I've yet to go anywhere on the Magic Roundabout and not hit speed restrictions - FOR NO BLOODY REASON other than phishing for speeding tickets !!!!

I must admit I'm starting to wander away from revinue and leaning towards the fact they're setting these up to justify their own existance. overall speeding tickets from gatso etc have gone down a lot which means the 'safety partnerships' (pmsl) need to put more up to sustain themselves which I suppose is revinue driven in a way but not directly.

I still say limit all roads to 30mph and then we can all have a little sleep at the wheel, it'll be cool though cus no one will get killed....we'll all just be paying

Reason Truvelo's use Infra Red is simply to stop the flash blinding the driver as they are forward facing. The requirement to paint cameras yellow was only ever "advisory" and several have been left "camouflaged" all the time. If you ever go Manchester - Sheffield via Woodhead look out for the ones at the end of the M67 going down the big hill towards Glossop - they're f**king British Army green! Try and spot them if you don't know they are there!

Problem with sat navs is they're only as good as the last update.....

Def worst route I know though is M74 to Glasgow, always got sneaky van f**kers on the bridges over the motorway.

Got 9 pts on my license but do 40K miles/year. Over the 3 years I've got the points, I've done 120K miles or what Joe Average might cover in 10 yrs, yet still got plod telling me I must be dangerous as I've got 9 pts!

Sorry, this is the one subject guaranteed to start me ranting!

Regards

Mat

I had a fantastic drive a while ago to Glagow and back, rarely fell below 90. I only heard all these horror stories about the M74 later, must have been the luckiest fecker around that day.

you guys should come over to ireland! Due to our backwardness we have relativily few speed camera. And also, if you are foregin and get caught speeding in the republic, you cant get points( British and Irish points system not compatible)

went from Cork to dublin last week averaging just over 85. Only shame is that there isnt more motorway outside of Dublin.... :)

Right Eoghan... We're all coming to visit you!!! :)

No Cameras.... :D

Free points.... :D

and Loads of A/B Roads! :D

Awesome!

Are they more friendly to people with English accents these days?

Some friends of mine went over from Swansea to Cork, camping... Wlked into a pub and it was like a scene from a western - musci stopped playing, people stopped drinking with their arms half raised to their mouths....

The moment the boys opened their mouths and their thick Welsh accent came out they were greeted like old firends and bought drinks all afternoon by people they'd never met...

Welsh_mode = ON; !!

I was caught by an unmarked knackered old silver Mondeo heading back to work a few weeks ago here in Ireland (South). Was doing about 40 over the limit at least....on a clear N4 (Irish Plates)

I thought the guy in the MOndeo behind was picking his nose but he was in fact gesturing for me to pull over, I couldn t see the flashing lights as they were below his bumper ( I'm in a 4wd) but I eventually heared the siren over the music - er, Basement Jaxx.

The Garda here are not like the the Police in the UK..........they are bred to be all the same (GUPI). Always road blocks and no nonsence.

Anyway, he was pretty miffed with my uk license as he could nt award points. The points scheme is a relatively new thing here and most of the signs warning 'Get the point , not the points' have been scrawled over with the words Tesco! :)

We went our seperate ways....sniff..........

Anyway, they are introducing the cross border points system now so the honeymoon is over-oh and any sort of detection stuff is illegal.

I have to ask myself - 'do I feel lucky'?

Yes Robin, I'd like to think we are more friendly, unless you really go into the sticks. ie people whose parents were probably related :D

Detection - ware is illegal here, but people still use it a lot. Havent heard of anyone getting caught with it. :)

but if you are over here with foreign plates you will get more attention, especially the british yellow! and god help ya if its a black BMW

Black BMW?!?!?! (Am I missing something there! :) )

Are things like Road Angels illegal?

It's impossible to justify by law - unless they're going to forbid the placement of crosses on maps too!

yes, road angel, laser dectector, scrambler are all illegal here. as stated before, i havent heard of anyone getting persecuted but i wouldnt exactly have it in full view on the dash if i was coming up to a check point!

They just have a thing for pulling over black beemers here. they hate the thought of you not paying VRT (vehicle reg. tax), cause they're afraid the revenue might miss the money.... :)

How on earth can a road angel be illegal? :)

I have an A to Z.... am I banned from using my pen to put "X'es" on that? :D

What about when I get a sat nav map ...am I forbidden from putting electronic "X'es" on that?!

Do I have to erase my own memory every time I see one and promise not to remember it?! :D

So then how does that differ from a Road Angel - There are some people in legislative positions who ought to have NO right to legislate through their own sheer ignorance! :D

I think its mainly due to that fact that there are very few speed cameras in Ireland. This leads to the more 'portable' way of catching speed (ie hair dyers, tri-stands) And since it would be pointless if people always knew where these were prior to passing them, detecting them is illegal. Just so they can catch you doing 85 on the straighest part of the motorway.

Jerks.

And there we were thinking that preventing such crimes would be better than detecting them.

It's akin (albeit loosely) to watching a man with a knife stab someone then arrest him rather than try to stop him in the first place. These 'speed traps' are in supposed accident blackspots so surely knowing to slow down in those areas can only be a good thing?

You hit the nail on the head - as I've always said the technology is and has been in place to stop speeding and (in the anti-speed lot's eye's) all road deaths but it's not in place. Surely a detection device is a good thng as it gives you warning and time to notice where a accident spot is....but of course it also stops speeding fines :)

This is how the Police force is also evolving in the UK to a reactionary one as opposed to the prevention.

The GPS idea might be in the pipeline but I thill think we're safe from it / and or it'll be voluntry. It has loads to do with privacy and human rights, it's illegal to track someone's movements as this is deemed 'private / personal information' and has all sorts of implementations. Also the equipment is not all that reliable (any wireless system isn't) esp in heavy rain.

The best way to do this if they wanted to is the unit sending pulse data every 5-10mins on it's position to jusdge where the car is at a certain time but again this is stepping all over the human rights thing. The cost would also be very high as the system needs to be secure and also the bandwidth needed to send all those transmissions....and on, and on.
