I have recently acquired an Esprit V8 which hase a removable glass roof panel. I have seen the photographic report for stowage of this panel on th e main site. However try as I might I cannot get the panel into the boot. The boot aperture is about 25mm too narrow to clear the edge of the panel and allow it to drop in. Can anyone give me more detailed instruction to succeed, and/or does anyone else experience a similar problem? :)

It will fit, you just have to get the angle perfect. The corner of the glass passes through the corner of the boot after you have most of the roof in.

The LEW guide is spot on but it does take some practice. The inital entry angle is very high and the panel must go in the opposite side to the battery first. Well thats the side I always put it in and have never risked any other way. The main difficulty is the weight and the fact that you have to hold it away from yourself to get it in.

I had the same problem as you. I have a solid roof panel which apparently goes in the boot/trunk. I've tried every which way and cannot get it in (i had the stowage cover on it too). I rekon this is near impossible and it may never come out again if it does go in!! :)

I'd like to see a video of someone doing this!

Hi,

I put the roof in the boot all the time. It just takes practice.

I have moved the boot alarm switch on my car from the off side to the near side to improve access (it makes life a bit easier) but it is possible without doing this.

On my old GT3 I did think about moving the vacume pump (on top of the rear near side wheel arch) to make more room for the roof. Never did in the end.

I have always thought this illustrate the best and worst of Lotus design. I really like the large removeable roof (key selling point for an Esprit for me), but am shocked at the poor attention to detail when various parts have been added in the boot space make it ever more difficult to get the pannel in.

OKAY, Handbrake on.... Reality check please...

Before feeling you MUST find someway to get the lid off and in the boot. Take the lid off and go for a drive for 10 minutes or so. Get up to motorway speeds and then you will probably come home and do what I did. Put the roof back in and forget all about the fact that it will come out... The wind noise and buffeting is just horrible...

If you want a soft top them buy a car designed to be a soft top....

PS. But then I do have a mint 1972 MG I can do 'soft top' play stuff in...

Jeff is right about the roof off on the Motorway its heavy going. But if the sun is out and you can avoid motorways its great !

No back Wheels... No Front Wheels, Brakes, steering rack, shocks, springs, cooling fans, Suspension arms or antiroll bar. :P

I even had to put the boot floor back in the car just to do that little video :lol: .

Damn thing better be ready for the factory. I spent today cutting through the lower suspension arm studs and then banging them out. :( Sound familiar .... :lol: At least I've got mine out. :P Although I have to give full credit to my old man, who saved the day.

LOL why do I have visions of someone getting the sunroof in the boot going for a lnice ong drive on a sunny day..

Then it starts raining and they need to put the roof back on but can they figure out how to get it back out of the boot... Nope.... :rolleyes:

This will set Carl up for a video of how to get it back out again....

I've tried the same thing with the roof bag on...no luck. It seems only easy when storing the "raw" roof without the bag. Anyone with similar experience?

Perhaps a video demo of the same exercise with the roof bag on?

Thanks for the video, I tried, and on the third attempt I mastered it and got the roof panel in. Thankfully, on the first try I managed to get the panel out of the boot.

Clearly some young wipper snappers thought this problem awfully amusing. Well Im 6' tall and 54 yrs old, so now I LOL at the youngsters, and more often than not, leave them behind in my trail of dust!
