Chris Huhne Lies deceit and Conceit!

Wow. Just reading about Chris Huhne. For those who don't know about this he is a Liberal Politician, member of Parliament and part of the Coalition Govt here.

For me it epitomises Politicians worldwide.

To avoid 3 penalty points on his license he got his wife to lie and pervert the course of justice and say she was driving.

He then cheated on his wife so she told the Police and divorced him.

He then spent £500,000 on legal bills and lied to the public for many years saying he was innocent etc, a few weeks ago he was telling political allies at Christmas parties that the case was on the brink of collapse and he was innocent.

Huhne, a multi-millionaire with an extensive property portfolio, recruited the country’s best legal team to fight his corner.

Just last week he pleaded not guilty.

Then yesterday he pleaded guilty when he realised the trial was going ahead and he couldn't "plea bargain" or threaten his way out of it after trial judge Mr Justice Sweeney delivered a damning ruling throwing out his final attempt to get the case dropped.

Whats the cost? To him Jail and loss of everything from his political career to his family.

To us multi millions fighting to bring the case to court and fighting one after another of Mr Huhnes attempts to drop the case. The court are yet to decide whether they will incurr more cost and attempt to recover the cost to the tax payer. Just what Huhne wanted I suspect.

All for a £70 speeding ticket and 3 points! Unbelieveable.

We are used to this sort of thing in Eastleigh.

One of our previous MP's was found dead dressed in womans underwear with an orange in his mouth, whilst "doing a Hutchence".

Its a great place to live!

We have a pollie here who is in trouble for fraud. The case has not gone to trial as yet and obviously he is saying he is innocent. However, I think when the police arrest you on 147 charges of fraud and misusing funds, you'd like to think they had done their homework.

Oh and our current Labour PM said she didn't know anything about it until the media told her.

he was doing 69mph in roadworks that were 50mph. So 3 points only. I think he may have already had 9 points tho, so may have been facing a driving ban.

And yes Bibbo. His son is damning in his assessment of his father and his morals.

What's wrong with that?

He had 6 points, got caught by a camera, then got pulled for driving with a mobile so he faced 12 points and disqualification. He's a nobhead and tried to lie his way out of it by palming the speeding offence onto his misses. Deserves 12 months chewing on porridge if you ask me.

In decrying misleading information from our politicians and public figures, you haven't been totally objective in the information you have relayed above Michael.

When stating "Oh and our current Labour PM said she didn't know anything about it until the media told her." the context infers she was responding to the 147 charges of fraud, where as she was referring to the arrest warrant which had been exercised about 2 hours previously in NSW whilst the PM was in Queensland at the time.

Can you begin to imagine the ramifications if the Police had notified her, or anybody else prior to exercising the Warrant ?

We may have our opinions of Craig Thompson and other politicians, public figures under similar scrutiny, we have a legal system which presumes innocence until "Proven" guilty, I'm a supporter of that and until someone comes with a better one I'd like to stick with it.

There are many companies, big multi nationals operating right here in Australia to whom plying clients with booze and birds is a legitimate expense. Government departments both state and federal, have similar accounts and have operated under both Liberal and Labour.

One of the 147 charges is for buying an ice-cream out of HSU petty cash, please tell me they have more than that.

Indeed, I notice my paper clips come in boxes of 100, maybe it's 1 & 1/2 boxes of paper clips.

My point is that in this case Due Process has been trashed to the point that may see him get off even if guilty, purely on that basis.

We all have a duty to allow the law to take it's course for that reason. (With the possible exception of a convicted Pedophile)

The law would have given Huhne credit for an early plea of Guilty ...instead he left it until the very last moment which means a lot of public money got wasted on hearings etc. His instructions to his lawyers must have been unequivocal-"put off the evil day for as long as possible".

It is worth mentioning that all those persons  / authorities  who hold Public Office in the UK owe an additional duty of Probity and Integrity to the public they serve.

Not that you would know it !!! :police:

Cynicism is understandable but I remain reluctant to join the "all politicians are crooks" fraternity and  was recently pleased to note that the MP father of the editor of Practical Classics no less, Kelvin Hopkins, seems of real integrity with no expenses claims clouds hanging over him at all (and whose views chime with mine!) -  but Mr. Huhne`s conduct does not make my stance easy to maintain !

... to paraphrase Douglas Adams, the person who craves being an MP is normally the sort of person who should not be an MP at all.....

I have to agree with Dan, not all are crooks, I went to see my MP the other week and he has taken up the case as a number of us had raised concerns.

But we have had a lot of cases in Essex with crooked Cllrs etc... I think it's the normal case of the minority ruining the majority.

I agree Dan. Not someone who wants the power, prestige  and pension plus large salary that they get when they retire and get those nice non-exec positions. I must admit, I wouldn't do their job for what they get paid but then many of them have side positions and businesses anyway.

I read that Hune's son was none too impressed that his mother had taken the rap, and had exchanged a series of texts with his father. that made it clear that the points swap had taken place and that Hune had been lying.  Hune's son had threatened to reveal them to the court if he didn't own up.

Hune's lawyers had tried to get the texts rejected as inadmissable evidence but failed - after which he changed his plea to guilty.

Understandable.  If I were a prison official, I doubt I'd endure him that long.

Prisoners on sentences of between 3 months and 4 years (unless for violent offences) become eligible for Home Detention Curfew after serving  a quarter of their sentence -that`s why they got released "early"

(although being middle-class and "respectable" undoubtedly helps).

(Wonder if that man who got 6 mths in prison for nicking a £3.50 case of bottled water in the riots, got out after 6 weeks ?)

I do get the impression that if it was us it would take longer to get out. But then I suppose it saves us about £10,000 in general expenses by letting him out early.
