Bibs
Anyone know anything about trimming them? We've inherited 3 and they're all massive, these are the 2 I'm worried about and want to cut but I understand that just steaming into them is a bad idea. We had about 4 apples last year, 1 pie's worth Help! Bazza 907
The old rule of thumb was that you should thin out apple trees such that a pigeon should be able to fly though it. No idea if that's right but I try to be fairly brutal otherwise you'll end up with lots of little/useless apples

basalte
I know nothing about pruning them but don`t worry about the lack of apples. Our tree normally gives 50, this year only about 8 grew. The record rainfall stopped insects from pollinating them. Hopefully better next year.... Gold FFM mayevora Posted February 6, 2013 Gold FFM Report Share Posted February 6, 2013 We had about 4 apples last year, The Bulmers takeover is on ice then I kind of agree with Bassa's thin it out comments - no expert but any pruning I've done, this is the time of year I've done it by.
